Interesting, sounds a little like Naim's power supplies....

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it...", yet I wonder if it is only a matter of time before my G68 PSU goes; and if it does go, I'd rather it doesn't take out a board or two. At the very least, is it worth checking the 5V line?

My G68 is one of the very first and I've owned it essentially from new and I leave it in standby rather than switching it off. I wonder if this has a material impact on my G68?

It's been back to Meridian for a rotary knob replacement, but I don't think they replaced the PSU (I should go and check).

Nick - I am very impressed.

Is anyone up for building a linear supply for my G68 - I would be very interested - please PM me wink

With regards the G68, if the sizes of compatible linear PSUs that Nick has found are typical, then it going to be a very tight fit for an internally fitted unit which raises concerns over cooling etc. An external Naim style solution may be an option. I'm not brave aenough to mess around. If mine goes, I'll probably replace it with the switched unit that Meridian fits

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Hello ,

My G68 is by DB System ( south of France ) .

http://www.db-system.fr/bd_system/Tweaks_%28ameliorations%29.html

The name of the boss is Dan Bellity . For 15-20 years ago , he was the distributor of Meridian in France , and he speaks English.

It will make me an external linear power supply , with Black Gate caps . I should get it all next week.

Watch this space. I've just bought a C61R - the custom install version of the G61R. That's a challenge to fit an LPS - if I can do it with the G61, I can definitely do it with the G68.

I also want to see if it can close the performance gap with the 861. Maybe I'm being optimistic, but the 861v2 modification was so successful I can hardly wait to hear how the G61 responds. If that goes well, I'd be happy to modify other people's controllers. I'd quite like other people to hear what I've heard.

I wasn't very receptive before to suggestions of using an external supply, but now I know it works, I might re-visit that option.

Hi Nick,

I will keep watching this space - very much hopeing for it to be possible!

Hi All,

My C61R finally arrived, so I started playing with it straight away. It seems to be identical to the G61R apart from the case (and a serial port on the front panel). The case is conventional, and allows a bit more space inside that the G-series cases, so I'll try to take that into account.

The key thing for me was to establish the power consumption, so I've been measuring that. These are the worst case results:

AC consumption:
126mA x 240V = 30W
DC Consumption:
+5A: 2.0A
+12V: 123mA
-12V: 85mA
So call that about 13W internally, and standby is very close to operating consumption.

That's a nice low overall figure, but if you look at the power supply specs in the table on 8-10-11, you'll see that the popular and compact HTAA-16W supply that I was hoping to use will be at its limit on the +5V supply. I think most people would want to have some margin in hand with the power supply.

Some models of the G68 will presumably have a slightly higher consumption, but that won't be any problem as its so much bigger, and lots of supplies will fit.

For the G61 though, it looks like the obvious choice is the FG Elektronik NMC-905, so I've got the excuse I need to go ahead and get one of those. Removing the existing SMPS looks tricky, and I'll need to shorten one of the plastic board stays, but overall I'm looking forwards to seeing what a G-series can sound like .

Was that the one on eBay USA a few weeks ago? I didn't think anyone had caught it as it stayed at $500 right until it was about to end, then all the bids came flying in. My limit was $1100, but nice purchase if you were high bidder.

That's the one! The seller was none other than Paul McGowan of PS Audio, and he only bought the unit for evaluation. He didn't volunteer any opinions on it, though.

I've been trying to get a G61 for some time, they seem to be rather sought-after, and worth more than a G68, which might have made a more logical test-bed. It was difficult to value a used C61, as I've never seen one sold before, but I was getting a bit desperate. The C61 is a challenge though, and the combination of power demand and space availability cuts the options down.

I have another big catch coming-in this week, as well. I'm looking forwards to hearing what controller PSU mods can do for DSP speaker systems as well....

Has C61 got room correction like G61r or not like G61?

I never really understood the G61 other than as a 568.2mm with multi channel in and G series cabinet and soft keys/display. Seems like Meridian didn't understand it either and soon replaced it with the much more desirable G61r which on paper was a G68J in a smaller cabinet.

Yes, it has MRC. Basically its a rack mount version of the G61R.
