Mind if I start a new thread to move to from the "deeply frustrated waiting" thread when you get your update?

I've been updated to 5.4 for my DSP6000s. Whilst being guarded about first impressions what with the build up of expectations and all, I am very very pleased indeed with the sound. First impressions only but I note a more focused soundstage with greater clarity and transparency (even though I don't like those adjectives particularly). The 6Ks are singing. Thanks M (and my dealer), worth the wait.

Cheers Tintin

Tintin,

Many thanks for starting a thread on a positive note.

Can I ask others to stay On Topic in this thread please.

Regards,
Carl

Since I got my new (old) DSP6Ks with the firmware already installed I can't comment on before and after but I can say they are a fantastic speaker with no bass problems in my relatively small office.

The G68 benefited greatly from the Trifield width fix. Using the width and center speaker depth I can now equal the bass output of stereo in Trifield, and the soundstage is now better defined between the L&R speakers. A big gain here.

I hadn't gotten around to loading the 3db trick so I have no basis of comparison there. Redbook CDs are smoother almost accross the board now. My 5K2s were apodising so the G68 is doing a better job apparently. I keep going back upstairs to my office though.

My perception is that the update is remarkable. I held onto my 861V4 when upgrading to V6, and am now very glad I did. I can't compare the two because of speakerlink issues/Sooloos, but the V4 really sings again, with hugely uplifted detail/transparency.

Yet what has really bowled me over is the update to the DSP Speakers. I have ranted before about the abandonment on the 7ks, of a 'work in progress' model, only to now feel that they have finally come into their own. If I were told this was an apodising filter effect, I would not question it, even though it is not. More suprising has been the effect on my old 96/24 5ks, fed by the MC200 digital output as a second zone - wow! More detail, breathtaking imaging, and a creamy smoothness that beggars belief.

I vowed I would never buy further DSP speakers; not so sure tonight!

Hi Richard

Is your MC200 connected directly to the 5000s, or via one of your 861s?

Cheers

Hi George,

They are directly connected to the MC200.

I was very surprised, and as before, the MC200 is so far ahead of any disc spinner used in that room.

And for the degenerates, the old 861 feeds a dining room/kitchen system; a man has gotta eat!

I would think the value of second hand 861s should be rising!

According to the release notes, there are no sonic changes to the DSP5000 firmware... The changes are only for DSP speakers that can either up-sample or are three-way.

Perhaps the SLS helps? I may be carried away, but I really enjoyed the 5ks today. But I also really enjoyed a G98 recently; the firmware may be good, but the basic product always is.

Must read release notes to exclude human bias next time!
