Installing was not straigtforward for me because I had files scattered around in more than one spot but, after some frustration, it clicked. However it seems to have corrupted the order of inputs so they cycle round in different order from the unit but all is ok via the remote (a Theatre Master MX700 - not the ghastly Meridian effort).

I've yet to do more extensive listening but I have been startled at the increased resolution on CDs and the improved surround on PLIIx. This was not expected so I doubt I'm imagining things, or am I?

Hi Tassie,
No your hearing is not corrupted.I am simply amazed (blown away) at the resolution that's being projected with this upgrade (on well recorded CD's). As in another post that I commented in it seems as though the sound is holographic and floating outside of the speakers and the speakers have become totally transparent.I have the 7000's L/R and 5000 center and they are blending so well together. With the v.4 upgrade then the RC with the PLIIx software added I am more than pleased with my system. It would take a huge torch to melt the smile off of my face. Meridian did a GREAT JOB with this total upgrade kit and now the Coupe de gras with the PLIIx. Enjoy, I surely am, I find myslf not wanting to watch DVD's I just want to rediscover my CD collection.
Is it live or is it Meridian?,

Stacey,
Yeah,Yeah,I know, you rememberd huh? I am super pleased I even have that. My plate over-runneth :> ). That was way back in those platoonsgt days. Too bad I never got that 5500 review out of you, do you remember that too??????. Too late now as you can see I have graduated to 7000's .Now what do I think about DTS since I have heard it from my upgraded 800? it's just fine. But as I think you said, I wasn't missing nothing.

Greg, you describe the beautiful sound admirably. I put a variety of CDs on this afternoon and the audio is truly awesome :-))

So, all you other 861 owners - digital extraction (pun unintended but highly appropriate), download the new file and update ASAP!

John,
I did not much listening yet, but my impression was that the PLIIx settings have much more active side and rear surrounds than the 'old' modes. So there is a huge difference between running Discrete/Cinema and PLIIx
The same is true for 2 channel via Trifield and PLIIx music.
Still have to decide what i find better.

I always find it disturbing that software upgrades seemingly cause such huge jumps in sound quality. Makes me wonder why I bothered buying the player in the first place if it was actually so "poor" [Linked Image from softronix.com]

Anyone else found that after installation, recalibration and room correction the average volume setting needs to be upped by 3 or 4 compared to previously ?

V. tired now. Up till all hours last night 'listening' [Linked Image from softronix.com]

Yes Manus, you are right, I am listening to music at 3 db louder.

Now I guess the reason is that it is just so much more seductive and smoother without a hint of digital nasties.

However, this is not how music really sounds. At a live classical music concert the sound can sometimes be a bit harsh, as if listeing to a CD suffering from digitalis. So maybe the new software is softening the sound? Be that as it may, I prefer it and am lapping up music -> more goose bumps than for quite awhile :-)
