Hi JPW,

I guess you haven't had the LifeStation long but how does the picture & audio quality from it compare to direct disc playback on your Oppo 95 for ripped Bluray & DVD files ?

Also how easy is the Bluray ripping process ? The integration of this process is one of the things that attracts me to it over the Dune solutions.

For any Dune users, how does the picture and audio quality compare to direct disc playback ?

What I am really after is a solution that supports file playback at the native video resolution to allow my lumagen to handle the deinterlacing and scaling (not an issue for Bluray) with internal HD audio decoding for the HD621.

I haven't found anything yet that will allow DVD file playback at the native resolution.

Justin

There is no quality difference on the Dune wether you are playing directly from BD or streaming over the network from HDD apart from speed. HDD NAS streaming is faster than BD disc spinning smile

Automatic switch to native resolution output from DVD rip is not there, it will scale to your selected resolution. It will however automatically set the refresh rate 24/50/60 on the fly. Doesn't matter if it's playing from file or disc.

I find it very difficult to believe that any UK Manufacturer is supplying a solution that allows for Blurays to be ripped "easily"

It is just not "kosher" in today's heavily licenced world

"Fair Use" is not even allowed to come into it

The DMCA takes first priority........and nobody has found a legal way around that

I'm not sure any standalone BD product allows easy ripping.

You need a PC/MAC with a Bluray drive attached. It's VERY easy after that using AnyHDDVD or MakeMKV to rip either ISOs or individual movie files.

Richard,

It is really friendly. Per default it boots into the Windows Media Center GUI. No logon or passwords.

Anyone who is not afraid of using a relatively simple remote should be fine.

Hi Justin

Hi JPW,

The picture quality is very good, no difference as far as I can see.

The audio is also very good although the Oppo has a little bit more punch for my ears, but this is just my subjective feeling.

The Bluray ripping process is very easy. Insert the disc make a view clicks (choosing there to rip to if you have more then one location, choosing the cover) and you are done.

As for allowing DVD file playback at the native resolution I suggest that you send an email to Evolve: sales@evolvemedia.eu they are very responsive.

Regards Jens-Peter

I found out about the Evolve system when reading an article on the Homecinema Choice website about copyright law.

Apparently the Evolve system reminds you of your legal obligation when starting to rip a disc and nothing more :

It's towards the end of the article.

Thanks JPW,

The system is looking more and more tempting to me.

I have already spoken to Charlie at evolve and he was very helpful. I don't think that the native resolution is going to be possible (on any system not just the evolve).

It would be nice to see a demo of the upscaling capabilities before I buy, but that's not going to happen here in Jersey for either the Dune or Evolve.

I'd disagree with this, any system needs to know what the input resolution is.
The key is the willingness to programme the output to be the same automatically.

Just looked up the Pricing on the Evolve Products to compare against the Dune options

** Evolve LifeStation price: 3,800

** Connect the LifeStream (1,957) or LifeStream Mini (1,276) for multi-room AV.

** The 1TB of storage (20 Blurays) can be expanded further by adding one of the LifeStore add-ons.

- 4TB..................3,400
- 10TB................3,320
- 20TB................7,660

Just a tad different from the Dune Pricing smile

I'd like to think it was possible. Perhaps I will contact them again and see if they can provide it in a future update.
