Ferrari,

do you rally have that type from Bicker SNP-Z101 ?
The specs shows its still a switching PS and have only less ripple
like 100mV instead of 120mV and for 5 V its the same 50mV.

The calex LINEAR PS looks much better for ripple below 5mV !
But the 32305C have less current on the +12 VDC side-only 1 Amp.

My old original PS from M the
ASTEC 5A40-1313 and
UMEC UP0653S-01
have 2,5 or 3.0 A on the +12 V side.
I dont know how much the G68 or 861 needs.
The +5V looks good as original M have 5A or 6 A
and the -12V side is 0.35 or 0.5 A .

The newest PS from M looks different- I have to take a look-.,
but I dont know the data.

But "ripple" is only one characteristic and also you have to see HOW the measured the "ripple",
the important data are the impedance with frequency of the PS and that from booth sides.
That means what the electronic will "see" looking to the PS,
and what get blocked from the main voltage to the PS !
And HOW data influences here the sonic impression, is not very investigated.
Shure less ripple make less distortions, but I mean the impedance is much more important.
So only hearing test can help here either somebody make some scientific studies on that.

Anyway, the PS is very basic influence to the sound.

Kristjansen, I wanted to upload some pictures and I will certainly do it in a short future.

Robert, I tried to ordered few more efficient psu but I wasn't able to find a company who could sale me less than 12 units, I already did the upgrade around 6 months ago and it has been working flawlessly ever since with excellent results.

May be HH can organize a powerbuy and we all can benefit from it, if replacing power supply is easy for the end users.

I recived a faulty product, and returned it - since then it has been impossible to get a reply from the company, I have sent more than 30 emails over the last 3 months - and no reply.
Now I am working on a lawsuit to get a refund or a functioning product.

Stay away from them.

Dennis Kristjansen
I would like to make a clarification to Dennis's posting.

Dennis did order a plug n' play power supply upgrade for Meridian G68/TacT processors.
When Dennis received it and try to install it, It was very obvious the power supply was incorrect as the supply was much too big to be mounted using the original mounting standoffs. Apparently the newer Meridian G68 are using smaller power supplies and was rewired for these supplies, than the older G68. So Instead contacting me about the discrepancy, Dennis went ahead and tried installing the supply without mounting properly it and plugging it in to a wire harness that was wired differently for the smaller supply. So when Dennis plugged the unit in to the wall power, He burnt up the power supply. THEN HE CALLED ME.

I asked Dennis to send me pictures of the original supply, and with its part numbers, I found that his unit used a much smaller supply with a different pin-out on the output side.
I advised Dennis to send back the supply for a refund OR If he can give me some time to find a better supply to be used, along in developing a new mod plan for that supply, I will send him the correct supply for his application. Dennis Agreed. When I received the supply back, this is when I found that Dennis destroyed the supply beyond repair.

Even though Dennis Burnt up the WORKING supply I sent him, I was going to give him one of these new supplies I created. But for some reason unknown, Dennis had made post's on several forums, that was a bunch of BS, just like he did here.

Normally, for my customers I offer a lifetime replacement policy for my supplies. And out of approximately 200, maybe 2-3 I had to replaced for my customers. But in Dennis case, who would do him any favors after his actions?

Switching supplies typically produce 100-200mV ripple and noise, while good linear supplies are down at 1-2mV. That's a 40dB improvement in power supply performance, and regulation is very good as well.

These are the improvements to the internal supplies, but I believe linear supplies cause much less RF emission down the power lines to other equipment. If I recall correctly, Martin Colloms measured 10dB more noise from the system when the 800 was switched on - and he thought that was good going. So even if a switching supply is adequately filtered internally, it probably degrades everything else that's hooked-up. One of the reasons why AV systems tend to sound worse than stereo systems IMHO.

So I think there's plenty of motivation for upgrading the PSU, not only in the player or controller, but potentially in the HD621 as well. This makes me wish I still had my G68D, so I could play with it, and compare with the 861V4. Linear supplies are inevitably bigger and hotter than switching supplies, but there's usually plenty of space in there. Just watch out for disreputable suppliers. BR,Nick
Use a separate enclosed Linear supply that can power all of your SMPS Meridian Gear.
But if a SMPS is done right, many will prefer SMPS over Linear.
You be quite surprised.

Sadly this Mauimods reply is only one part of the story.

I ordered the supply - and actually mentioned via email that it did not fit pysically in the Meridian - I was told that spacers would be sent, and they would be the solution to the psysical mounting of the unit.

Sadly it seemed that there where differences in the wiring aswell - not that this is Anthony's fault - but neither is it mine - how could I, as a normal user, know that a plug and play unit - with perfectly matching plugs etc. should not work? (Anthony didn't).

Perhaps this is all due to misunderstandings, and I have offered to reimburse Mauimods for the parts, if only we find a working solution - Mauimods know this to be true - and I have lots and lots of emails to prove this.

My reason for posting on the forums, was that it has been over a year without solution - and communication from Mauimods have been almost zero. Therefore I felt there was no other way.

When I finialy got through - Anthony, told me 3 months ago that he would send a working unit - I have heard nothing since? Now Anthony posts show that I am not to expect anyting....

I am not the only coustomer to post an experience like this on the web - sadly I did not not see the warnings until after my purchase.

I will pubilicly say this once more:

Anthony, please send me a working unit - and lets work out someting in regards to costs. After that I will gladly post a positve reply in all audio fourms.

But today the fact remains; I have paid $500+ and have nothing to show from it -wheater that counts as a favour I don't now.

If any forum members have a need to have further details, feel free to contact me - but I still hope Anthony and I will find a solution.

PS Please forgive my English - it is not my first language.

If anyone is interested in modifying their Meridian gear to replace the SMPS with a linear supply, Ive being doing a little research, and have several posts to make which may help people to pursue this option. I recently modified the power supply on my Japanese Sony 9100 amplifier, which is now running smooth, quiet, cool, and above all, reliably, so Im now turning my attention to my 861 controller. Much of what Ive found will apply to other products, as the power supplies are very similar (may even be the same).

Meridian gear requires +/-12V and 5V supplies, and though this sounds quite specific, its a common industry standard. If you search for power supply +12V -12V 5V on google, eBay, or one of the many electronics distributors, you get a lot of replies. However, these are mostly for switch mode supplies, which are by far the most common these days. As well as being smaller and more efficient, theyre also much cheaper! Narrow the search for linear supplies, and there are plenty of options, but theyre not easy to sort out. First of all, Im just going to dump a load of links, without explanation, that I found from various searches:

Having heard the effect of linear power supplies on various audio equipment, I have the plan to upgrade the power supply of my G68. However, up to this moment I have not had the guts to really go through with it ... I am afraid to break my G68 ...
