If anyone is interested in modifying their Meridian gear to replace the SMPS with a linear supply, I�ve being doing a little research, and have several posts to make which may help people to pursue this option. I recently modified the power supply on my Japanese Sony 9100 amplifier, which is now running smooth, quiet, cool, and above all, reliably, so I�m now turning my attention to my 861 controller. Much of what I�ve found will apply to other products, as the power supplies are very similar (may even be the same).

Meridian gear requires +/-12V and 5V supplies, and though this sounds quite specific, it�s a common industry standard. If you search for �power supply +12V -12V 5V� on google, eBay, or one of the many electronics distributors, you get a lot of replies. However, these are mostly for switch mode supplies, which are by far the most common these days. As well as being smaller and more efficient, they�re also much cheaper! Narrow the search for linear supplies, and there are plenty of options, but they�re not easy to sort out.
