I tried vol leveling by track and it worked. I didn't like it however and turned it off. I set it on my C15 which feeds to a G68 and then non Meridian passive speakers.

Hi Dolf,

May be an obvious one, but you are setting the volume levelling in the ID40 zone aren't you?
(As that's the one you're listening to)

And you did rip your CDs using the Control 15?
The volume 'offset' information is created during the ripping process I think.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for your help.

I think so. I set it up with one zone according to your help when I installed the V6.
Under Device Manager the ID40 is the only one listed as the zone under description.
I set the volume levelling by going to the ID40 zone at the bottom left, in the pop up zones menu I hit ID40 zone tools, and checked off the volume levelling "track". and it stays ticked off when I go to look at it, but there is no apply as the latest un-updated manual says I need to do.

It is a mix. When I originally had difficulty setting up my C15, I re-ripped my collection at the time with the C15. However, I mostly build my CD collection in Hawaii, rip it all there to FLAC and ALAC with dBpoweramp and then download the files and update my systems when I get home.

I tried this out by deleting The Who The Ultimate Collection and re-ripping it, but I cant hear any difference/improvement. I am not sure if I should have done the ripping process differently to make the volume levelling work. If this is the issue it would create a whole new can of worms set of questions and issues, but with my simple initial test it doesnt seem to be.

Hi Jack,

Did you do set up something differently than the process that I posted above?

Thanks,

Hi,

That is my frustration in a nutshell as I do most of my listening in the swim mode.

Not for me as I like my background a little more pronounced and push the limits of what the circumstances will allow. My excuse to the wife that the volume went up suddenly due to circumstances entirely beyond my control is not considered a valid excuse and means that the overall level must go down more than I could otherwise get away with.

To Ronnie -

but does the system do anything with that information?

How do you access that debug info?

Regarding when volume leveling is implemented - we ripped our collection through our desktop with ControlPC with no volume leveling specified in the settings. I find it hard to believe that the leveling option would have to be specified at the ripping stage.

Hi Dolf
I can confirm that the Gain and Peak Track information above also happens when Sooloos IMPORTS an existing FLAC or ALAC file...........i.e. it's not just the Sooloos Ripping that creates the necessary data

Just to confirm........the individual Tracks have the necessary data to perform the Volume Levelling or "Replay Gain" to give it its proper title.........whether ID40 is implementing or using that Data it is something I can't comment on at the moment

Worth remembering that JackD is using an MS600 (rather than an ID40)......and this maybe implementing the Data properly

Hi Dolf
Try this.........it may or may not help.......

On a Computer connected to your local network (which I assume the Sooloos is connected to as well)

Open a Browser..........in the Address Bar, enter the IP Address of the Sooloos Core, which I assume is your Control 15

This is likely to be something like "192.168.1.xxx" or perhaps "10.0.1.xxx"

After you enter that address, the Browser will return an Interface into your entire Sooloos System

Near the top of the page, you'll see two boxes........"Play" and "Settings".......Click on "Settings"

The screen will then show you a list of the Sooloos Zones..........look for whatever you may have called your ID40 Zone..........and to the right of that, you'll see a box again called "Settings"............click that box

A Dialog Box will appear with the Zone Name.........underneath that, you'll see "Volume Leveling" with Tick Boxes for "Off"....."Song"........."Album"

Click on the Tick Box for "Song"..............now click on the top right hand corner of the Dialog box to close...........reopen the Dialog box again to make sure that it has retained your setting

Now try replaying a "quiet" song followed by a known "loud" song and see if the 861/ID40 reacts properly

Hope that helps
Ronnie

Hi Ronnie,

Thanks for your help.

Very interesing and yet disappointing.

I followed your instructions to the letter and it went as instructed. The ID40 is now ticked for song. In the same place I was also able to check the C15 which is also ticked for song as per my previous work.

But "The Who" still blasts.

Very disappointing.

Sorry it didn't work out Dolf..........I'm not in a position to test this myself, but it sounds like it's not working as it should

I don't know if it's an issue with the recent software update or what........but at least the Sooloos has the necessary Gain and Peak Data per Album and Track to enable it to use it

From here, it's going to be down to Meridian

Anybody else willing to give Volume Leveling on the ID40 a go???

And I just tried using the browser access to implement volume leveling at the track level for our MC200 with no joy either. Marked volume difference between a track from a recent very loud CD (Pink) and a CD from way back (Stones). IMO, the suggested function is not operational.

But I'm also wondering what album volume leveling was intended to do when your queue is a set of indiv tracks from a variety of albums. I had hoped that the Sooloos was smart enough in this case to level with the average of the album from which the individual tracks came from. So in a swim for example, a relatively low volume track from a given album would play relatively soft, and similarly for a relatively loud track on a different disk.

And I had hoped that it would be simple to shift between leveling options since I wouldn't always want to have all tracks in a queue play at the same approx volume. (listening to a series of albums rather than indiv tracks)

all very puzzling
