I'm not saying that it will never happen, but 5.1 looks very unlikely at present.

Resolution enhancement is increasing the number of bits typically from 16 to 24.
Upsampling is increasing the sample rate, typically from 44.1KHz to 88.2KHz

Thanks for letting us know that the 808.3 displays 96KHz when playing a 192KHz source.
I was hoping that network connected Sooloos 'end points' i.e. no SPDIF interface might take advantage of 192 KHz, but I guess not.

I think Meridian lost a huge opportunity to gain a market advantage when developing SpeakerLink in not supporting 192Khz.

Thus I conclude that the only advantage of this update is that it one does not have to use a 3rd party tool to downsample the file before importing.

For the record, I believe 192Khz is way OTT, and all this is just a moot point.

Carl

Hi Steve,

MHR encryption is not used on Sooloos systems.

Have you double checked that the Device - C15 Zone Limit to x1 sample rate option has not been inadvertently checked?
With this option unchecked the C15 should always be outputting 24/96 or 24/88.2 either natively or by upsampling.

I'd check this option again, and also re-boot just in case.

Carl

The restriction is to do with the SPDIF & AES/EBU standard(s) in that the maximum output is restricted to 24bit/96kHz...

Regarding the analogue domain, I'm waiting for some information from Meridian about how the 24/192 output is handled, but I suspect the downsampling will occur in the DSP prior to output to the analogue outputs rather than after. I'll post as soon as I have clarification on this.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for stepping in here re. SPDIF & AES/EBU standard(s)...

So cutting to the chase and through the Marketing lingo, this 192 KHz file update is one of convenience and little sonic benefit.

Regards,
Carl

PS Id rather have FLAC 5.1 via ID40 support than 192 KHz output wink

This seems to be positive confirmation that your Control 15 is outputing 24/192 through the SL output. Do I understand correctly?

If so it doesn't seem to be consistent with some other observations.

(And of course it is all academic.)

Hi Nic - Yes, I'm confused too - I was performing A/B comparisons with the Transporter (which is 24/96 max output) using a 24/192 native FLAC file. I can confirm that I had a lock on 192kHz (because I've never seen it before and it surprised me).

However, since a reset overnight I can't reproduce the lock, instead I'm getting 48kHz via the Sooloos and 24/96 via the Transporter...

I've been thinking about this update and I feel it is typical Meridian....

Mostly fluff and basically no substance.

Where the update would be real useful is if M told us to start importing 24/192 resolution files because in the near future they will have a full implementation of 24/192 resolution across their range.......

In my dreams!!!!

After updating my Control:10 (latest version), TwinStores and Control:PC I tried to import a 192 file and it didn't work. Got the "Failed To Analyze Media Files" message. Rebooted entire system and tried to load a different 192 file and again failed.

This would seem to confirm that the Control:10 is not compatible with 192kHz incase anyone is courious.

Probably a blessing as it would only downsample it anyways... At least you won't be tempted to fill your harddrive full of huge files smile

My DAC can only play up to 96kHz. So not only will I not be tempted to fill my hard drives with the big files, I won't be tempted to go DAC shopping!

That's interesting, I wonder if my 192 files are the problem. I'll try again tomorrow with a 192 file from a different source.
