Off topic........but at the same time of interest to most here........I think some people will be surprised with the UK being held up as a benchmark.......especially those living there

Paradoxically, it is also because the US did not have its telecom infrastructure destroyed by war. Most of the last mile of copper in many US states still dates back from the pre-WW II era.

Here in Ireland our national thuggee organisation Eircom are such a joke. These bozos charge the line rental so they are making money without doing anything. At the moment I'm paying for an 8 Mbps service and I'm only regularly getting .86 Mbps.

They installed 3 extensions in the last decade to the main input but now say that for 'operational reasons' they cannot service them!

The Genius Service Engineer who called and tested with a different brand of router assured us that with all the above disconnected and the Sky boxes and telephone too , we had a rock-solid 10% of Freddie's ( the Lucky and Smart A$$ ) broadband's speed available !

Sound quality is so good though that even if I have to wait to really stabilise it, I will do so. It's just ludicrous (and sadly symptomatic of this country at the moment ) that we are currently being charged for an 8mbps service while using a line that one of their own Customer Service agents referred to as ' a 2mb line ' .

We are currently languishing in 24th place of the 27 EU countries in terms of broadband quality, a truly shocking statistic. A list headed by Lithuania ........ So much for the Celtic Tiger boom years .....

Located in the UK but we are NOT part of the UK. We are, however, part of the Commonwealth. We have the longest continuous serving government in the world

anyway I did a test:

My download speed is 4008 kbps and my upload speed is 474 kbps could someone explain if this is OK or not.

4 Mb is not too bad for a 8Mb DSL line which is what I assume you have got.

Edit: However if it's DSL+ (which can give up to 20Mb) it's poor and if it's an optical connection - very poor


I went through an 'optimisation process' on my 8Mb DSL connection a few months ago. I bought a separate modem which is installed right by the master socket and also got a socket faceplate with built in high quality filters. I also disconnected the ring wire which a source of noise.

Reducing the noise on the system upped my speed from 4.5 to 6.5Mb which is now far more consistent than it was.

Yes, crion only has old cable internet, newer installations here in denser parts of Sweden are commonly also 100/100.

But about that Why is Europe... article: No. it wasn't invented by Al Gore. People ought to know by now that Internet is a Swiss cheese.
