Me again, I just fell upon Linn Jazz via squeezebox in the F80 Optical. It is 320kbps and sounds amazing.
Give it a listen you may well be impressed, the best sound quality I have heard from the internet.

Enjoy, Chris smile

I listened to Mavis Staples "You Are Not Alone" on CD last night all I can say is WOW. The ablum is a mix of blues and blues gospel songs and the sound was top notch. It was mastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway studios and if I'm not mistaken he has a Meridian 861 in his studio.

I seem to remember (20 years ago), when looking to buy a CD, there was a reference book which detailed almost all CDs, giving a critical review of performance and quality of recording. It was updated periodically but having older, quality recordings listed made it very useful. Anybody remember this, is it still around in some form? Just wondering how you can tell a good recording from the plethora out there now (thinking mainly classical)?

I think you mean the Penguin Guide. It was still around a few years ago. There were also competitors later on.

I had the impression at the time that the Penguin recommendations were even blander than Gramophone's, but my opinion may be different if I went back and had another look now.

Thanks Nic, I seem to remember it being quite authoritative, whatever it was. Anyway, is there a good independent review source around now?

I listened to "Shaft" by Issac Hayes last night, great music but only on vinyl and those naughty download places, which I obviously wouldn't use or discuss.

"Beggars Banquet" from HD Tracks is stunning. "Tommy" is a great sounding HD Tracks download though I always felt the movie soundtrack version was much better, I think they hi-resed the wrong thing there...

Downloaded the free sample and the Herbie Hancock Album - River The Joni Letters, which is filling our house as I type! Recommended.

Cheers

One of the better neo post punk (opera concept) albums out is this pre-release:
David Comes to Life - F*cked Up

The band's name is F*cked Up = editing use profane language = lameness = cops are everywhere.

One of the better recent drone abstract electronic releases that really pushes M gear nicely:
By the Throat - Ben Frost

The present in hip-hop:
Goblin - Tyler, The Creator

Enjoy.

He (SS) did a song live on Loose Ends BBC Radio 4 extra today. Very good egg.

I am currently enjoying Hugh Laurie "Let them talk".
Cheers Chris smile
