In what way will that increase the Meridian customer base? What problem does it really solve? Looks like they totally lost the plot.
Firmware upgrades done by yourself was one of the major reasons why I have bought Meridian for the last 10 years. I recently bought a set of DSP5000 second hand to use as side speakers, knowing that I could easily upgrade the firmware myself in case it was old (and it was). For me this is a deal killer.
Getting service from dealers is an oxymoron as we all know all too well. And why would I want to disconnect and cart my gear around just to get a firmware upgrade? Not going to happen!
Main: Marantz Cinema 50, Meridian 271, DSP7200.2, DSP5200HC, DSP5000 rears, Meridian 210. PC/Headphones: Mytek Liberty II, Sansui CA-F1, Sansui B-2301, Sennheiser HD800, Kef R3

I assume they took down the firmware so others wouldn't be able to implement the unofficial apodizing firmware update easily, which seems prudent given their warnings concerning possible damage to amplifiers and speakers. Given that none of the firmware had been updated recently, this really shouldn't inconvenience anyone.
I don't think it is a foregone conclusion that they won't post the new firmware they have in the works once they take steps to secure it from prying minds. We'll just have to wait and see how things develop.
No sense getting all worked up contemplating doomsday scenarios until we know something definitive. It's a waste of time and energy. Listen to some music instead. It will make you feel better.

Its only speculation of course but I believe this is the most likely scenario. Actually I was surprised that Meridian firmware was not encrypted or at least had some CRC Checks if only to determine that it had loaded correctly in the device. Regards, Carl

If the message said something like please see your dealer while we restructure our new deployment system. I might believe they are encrypting or adding CRC. But they didn't.
I'm also amazed they never did CRC (not for tampering purposes) but for checking valid transfers (pretty standard stuff for eons).
With the up-market direction Meridian is moving I think it has little or no impact. So I doubt we will ever see it on the web again. The upgrade of 5200 and failure of 8000.1 Apodizing update is proof in my mind the old Meridian is long long gone (well before this whole episod).
Poor folks wanting to buy/sell used equipment that are not up to date are now screwed.

I agree with Frank in that we may be getting ahead of ourselves in speculation however maybe I'm missing something but why would anyone have to bring equipment into your dealer if you have a good relationship with one there should be no reason that the firmware couldn't be emailed to you.

+1...can we please take a collective step back until we hear something definitive. It's a waste of emotion and energy on something that is speculation.

Because emailing it out to a user would put the new firmware back into the public domain. Which to be honest will happen eventually anyway even if dealers are not allowed to issue firmware to users. This is why I believe M will encrypt the firmware and then make it available for download again. I guess the decoding will have to be done by a new version of WinFUP as I suspect the base firmware loader inside the products can not readily be changed. Regards, Carl

Given how my 568.2mm is a bit temperamental (it seems to work fine most of the time, then for no good reason can flash "Bad software" at me when switched on and need turning off and on a few times, if not a reflash) I think this is a very retrograde step.
My nearest M dealer is literally a 5 minute walk, but sadly they're not a premium dealer, and far more interested in flogging me Naim as the solution. I suspect that reflashing firmware is not going to be in their repertoire.
Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.
Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

In reality, I don't think this is a biggie. I suspect a good many of us have that entire firmware folder backed up, so all we'd need is a sticky, where anyone who needs firmware posts a wanted notice and we can email it out. Unless we're into copyright problems?
As has been mentioned, it's years since we had any firmware updates, and if new feature firmware becomes available, I personally don't think it's unreasonable for M to charge and distribute it via dealers (for 'in person', or other onward distribution)
Cheers
George
