If you're considering a 861v6 and Sooloos upgrade you should also consider the optional ID40 card for the 861v6. This will give you the most optimal sound with this setup.
Actually when I had 8ks and a 5500HC I too found I listened more in DIRECT mode, however once the 7200HC was installed (and the system re-calibrated etc.) that all changed and I reverted back to predominantly listening in Trifield mode.
Your 8ks will either have 2 coax inputs or 1 coax and 1 SpeakerLink. So it is possible to connect the 861 to one input and another source to the second input. However, with George's "+3db tweak" I think the benefit, if any, is marginal. And again if you do go with an 861v6+ID40+Sooloos this will definitely be the best way to go.
