The main difference I noticed with the B&W is how open and airy the mid/treble is with far more detail that the digital theatre whereas the digital theatre has more impact. Can anyone with an 861 v6 give a view as to how much the v6 opens up the top end and detail or is the limitaton the DSP's?? I am toying with upgrading the centre to a 7200HC or going for the B&W with the 861. I have said this before in other threads, but it applies here again: taming the bass will open up mids and highs. Default MRC will not tame your bass correctly, manual (fine)tuning is necessary. So before investing any more money I recommend tuning MRC manually. If you wish you may send your MSL file to me and I'll do it for you (providing you did a proper MRC measurement). Just send me a PM.

@Avii, I have noticed several times on this forum that people state that the sound is not open, or their system lacks details. In my experience this is usual caused by problems in the low end. Solving those problems also usually solves the other problems.

The biggest issue of automatic MRC mode is that filters are limited to -12dB. I have mailed with Meridian in the past (when they still answered customer emails) and they said it was no error, but on purpose. Personally I fail to see the purpose, as -12dB is simply not enough for some room mode frequencies in most rooms. And -12dB is the limit, which means most of the time only -9dB is applied. For instance in my room I need -16dB to fix the 44Hz response. That is 7dB difference from the -9dB value generated at 250ms decay. And I can say this make a difference of night and day.

Hi Evdberg, Regarding your earlier offer of tuning a MRC measurement, exactly (or approximately) what would you intend to do ? Don't you have to manually change response target-times & re-measure ? Thanks !

You only measure once.
You can create many profiles with different targets or manually create profiles (filters) by looking at the data. And you can emulate the effect of filters (but I find that does not work well).

You only measure once.....You can create many profiles with different targets or manually create profiles (filters) by looking at the data.... Ah, that's not clear in the manual / config programme pdf or in the wiki. I assumed that you had to re-run & change, re-run & change.... In that case, I don't understand how you create 1 set of filters for - let's say - having a door open & another set with the same door closed. Surely you need to re-measure for that ?

If you change something (open a door) of coarse you have to measure again-as a change of the soundfield happened. So with the stored measurements you can assign that to a (virtuell) source where you listen to that. If you listen to music the door is closed and watching a movie the door is open- a practical example is when you give your wife the "possibility" to bring you a beer..;-)) when you watching a movie ... Another example is the changed acoustic with the screen down to watch a movie or up to listen music. Another one is that you make some profiles with different reverbation times that better fit to the recording and your personal acoustic "taste" or took away the boomy bass ..

Danke Robert, understood, but if I'm brutally honest I really don't understand how you get all the measurements & all the related settings into the system - plus performing tuning on some of those measurements.... Even George's wiki isn't straightforward (or perhaps detailed enough) to explain that clearly. I even got lost trying to play with the reverb time option....
Could someone perhaps add a detailed step-by-step case-study to the wiki ?
By the way, has it started snowing yet - I'm desperate to get back to the mountains this year ?!

No offence but Robert's reponse above is confusing.
You don't assign a "Measurement" to a Source (at least not directly).
You can have as many named Measurements as you want (to a limit).
You can have as many named Profiles as you want (to a limit).
A Profile is a set of filters (for a bunch of speakers).
A profile can be generated automatically from a Measurement (with an Automatic Target or a Manual Target).
A profile can be generated manually using 3rd party tools (2 examples in Wiki).
You assign a Profile (a set of filters) independently to any DSP setting (Trifield, Cinema, Trfield2 etc.). You can also just assign Bypass (no MRC).
You can assign (as a Default) a DSP Setting to a Source (or a Phantom of a Source [e.g. a copy of a source]).
So indirectly you can have CD1 mapped to Trifield1 use profile1 generated from measured data1 with door closed. And CD2 use the same source mapped to Trifield2 generated from measured data2 with door open.
It's extremely flexible.
Personally I would not bother doing things like door open, door closed. You'll go nuts and it won't be all that much different. Unless the door is like behind your head or something and you listen both ways.
