My 800v4 is acting up. Has anyone run into similar situations or have possible suggestion/solution?

So while trying to load a CD the HD621 synchs as it should while CD spins up and down trying to read hunts for 20 seconds blinking "loading" on the face of the 800, then times out (think the 861 v4 gives up and times out because that sounds like where the click comes from the 861 or it could be the 800 reporting no disc? that trigger the click form the 861)and the 800 reports no disc.

Config is 800 HDMI/dig to HD621 to 861 v4
Nothing has changed except I took the Oppo out of the loop a few weeks back. The last few weeks the 800 was doing similar things as reported above but after another attempt or two she would figure it out, synch up and play. Not today.

Txs in advance.

My 800 will play CDs, but not DVD (or DVD-A) where it does the same thing you decribe. My sense is that the problem is probably going to result in a drive replacement, although, if you find out otherwise please do let me know.

Sorry, but your drive(s) probably needs replacing.

Hi CoachJay & Simon,

You need to send them off to have a new ROM drive fitted frown

What you both describe happened to my 800D too.
It would not play any DVDs
It would only play CDs intermittently.

Regards,
Carl

+1 - happened to mine also - it's the drive!

It's now started a new problem. Insert the disc (DVD or CD) and during the loading process - it reboots! Seems to load second time round but video display (HDMI) is just "snow". Power off and on and this time everything works.

Not every time but it's becoming more regular. I think the drive is OK - not sure if it's the power supply or some other electronics.

And I've been trying to avoid visiting the dealer (unilet) as that could be getting expensive with the various trade-ins on offer.

Hi Caldham,

My 800D developed that that problem too, about 3 months after the Drive and PSU (to a updated design) where changed frown

The problem was the power supply, mine was changed FOC by Meridian.

Carl

Like Carl, a new power supply cured similar problems for my 800.

Looks like my 800 has a trip to Atlanta in its future!

Thank you all for taking the time to share your experience and lending your suggestions. Tonight after letting it sit - the 800 magically (12 hours later) started right up 1st try.

If the system wasn't so new (1st owner, less than 20 hrs) as it is I would concur on either of the suggested hardware (PS or drive) but even the normally known Meridian weaker links can't/shouldn't frown be failing so soon, right?

I'll keep those that expressed interest apprised of developments. I too don't look forward to a trip to dealer as this purchase was made from one of the many former Meridian dealers that were substantially thinned by Mother a year or so back and now no longer in business. I'd hope "they" would take pitty on me smile

Kind regards,

Jay

Thanks Carl - that's confirmed my suspicions.

Hope the system survives the removal - last time after removing the 800 the 861 refused to power up. New power supply required!

I'm surprised M continue to have such problems with power supplies - my D6000s both failed, my 598 and 861 have all needed replacements. To learn that the newer systems still have the problems isn't encouraging.

Of course it could be that M have simply failed to find a PS that sounds as good and so carry on and simply bear the cost of replacing them when they go.

Maybe that's why the cost of the equipment is so high - they factor in 3 or 4 replacement power supplies over the lifetime! smile

Just out of curiosity, for folks who have had to replace the drive in 800, did you hear any strange playback sounds as the drive was going bad? I'm not talking about mechanical sounds from the player, rather artifacts through the speakers?
