I agree guys- thats why Im asking about what is the real advantage to the new Dune- if its not a better UI then what is it because the unit right now is terrific- and I output native to my radiance XE which does what it needs to do. See: http://dune-hd.com/hd_players/current/135-dune-hd-max.htmlThe new model has the faster 8642 chipset,a built in 3.5" hot-swap sata hard drive caddy, and supports extension board modules for adding a digital satellite or terrestrial receiver card, to allow recording and playback. If you have the current Dune prime 3.0, then i cant justify changing it just to get these few extra features. There is also the HDI Dune Pro, which has an audiophile analogue stage. Again if u are only using the digital outputs for feeding into Meridian gear, then this model also seems a bit pointless to buy.

A few things... 1. The Oppo BDP-93 supports blu-ray and has dual outputs...see http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/transports/high-definition-DVD-players-hd-DVD-blu-ray/oppo-bdp-93 2. The HDI Dune Pro [or the its successor, is there one] confuses me as I do not know what it would offer me over and above the Oppo BDP-93; that is: a) The BDP-93 providers me with a universal spinner (i.e. Blu-ray, CD, DVD, DVD-A, SACD, etc.). b) The BDP-93 provides me with Netflic Streaming. c) The BDP-93's scaling capabilities I could care less about as I have both a Lumagen RadianceXE and a Runc DHD 4. d) The SONOS music system with NAS provides audio throughout my entire house. e) While I might not be the norma -- at least around here -- I do not find myself needing a method / source to connect a HD or other network device to(i.e. PC, NAS, etc.) to view material in my home theatre...granted, were I desirous of this the Dune would be worth considering.. With the above noted can someone please tell me what I am missing becuase, assuming I am missing nothing, the possible benefit is as noted in e) above... 3. What is the HDI Dune Pro's interface like...is it easy to navigate...is it fast...is it slick looking...etc. TIA... The Dune is an easy to navigate MEDIA PLAYER that allows you to view a variety of files either from it's internal HD, Bluray spinner (if you go that route) and more importantly it networks into your media server (if you have one). To date Dune is the best for Media Streaming. You can also create a fairly involved MOVIE DATABASE w/ poster art and imdb info for each movie. When I compared image quality between the BDP83 and my Dune Prime 3.0 on a Kuro screen I found PQ indistinguishable. So the Oppo was sold that day and the Dune has been a flawless media player since. I am curious if the BDP-93 is attempting to position as a TRUE media player v. the Dune. I have my doubts at this stage, but I wonder how the PQ of the newest SIGMA chipset will fare against both the Dune 3.0 and the BDP-93.

I think in your case there is only a need to get the Dune if you require better network media playing/streaming capability than the new Oppo will provide. The Dune plays just about every video/audio format, and supports DVD and Bluray ISO's, and like the Oppo can decode Blu-ray DTS-HD MA lossless audio to PCM for feeding into an HD621. It also allows you to add an optional digital satellite or terrestrial TV card. However it cannot playback DVD-A or SACD discs, whereas the Oppo can. Though these can be converted and ripped to hard disk as FLAC 24/96 format so the Dune will play them. The GUI in the new HDI Dune pro is supposed to be better than the other models.

Dr. Bill I appreciate the response...media servers / media players are not things that I aminterested in at this point [perhaps that makes me old school and behind the eight ball] bur for the time being I will stick with my Oppo BDP-93 [inclusive of netflix streaming] and my HD HDTV Cable provider... I will also add that the idea of creating a library is also not the least bit inviting to me...I have created a very accurate, extensive and deatiled music library for my SONOS and the though of taking on another project re: video has zero appeal to me... With the new home theatre nearing completion the only thing I really want to do is walk in the room slap in a blu-ray of turn on a football game and sit back and enjoy...I am more than happy to view media that is delivered but have no desire to create a calaog or library...again, this is just me... Thanks for the helpful explanantion...

Just for information, I asked on the Oppo Facebook page if the RS232 options for the BDP-93 will be the same as the -83, and they replied that RS232 control would be standard on the -93. Which means for those who want RS232, the -93 is actually cheaper than the -83.
