I just played with Trifield width on my old 565z3v6.0 The range of widths is 0 to 1.0, not 1.5 Did this expand at some point?

I also rechecked the effectiveness using two different sources via a 562V1. On BBC R4 on a speech programme I could hear no difference yet on BBC R3 with music it was very obvious - source was a SkyHD box outputting PCM over SPDIF.

Similarly ZDF HD on speech made no apparent difference yet Arte HD with music was again very noticeable - source was a Topfield satellite receiver outputting PCM and DD2.0 (I checked both) over optical.

Clearly the selection of content is important when testing subjectively.

Yeah of course, if it is mono then it will stay in the middle no matter what.

Same as if I play something mono using the stereo preset it sounds like it is coming from the centre channel.

Mono for me gives me a "Wall of sound" across the front three speakers when using Trifield.
I listen to BBC radio 7 alot and that is a Mono broadcast on DAB. Comedy and drama.
Anyway, it sounds great. Width, I just leave it set to Max.

Cheers Chris smile

Hi Chris,

Quote
I just leave it set to max

...that's why you hear it across all 3 at the front. Setting width to max will do that. Setting it to zero will collapse it to the front centre.

All this is based on what I recall Bob explaining at HH2.

All this also because width works on your 565.

I am lucky with that, and I appreciate the frustrations of a fauly width setting. It should work, Period!!

Is the not working width stuck at wide or Narrow or in between?

I have never thought to set it as anything other as wide in my ageing system, but I understand there are plenty of reasons why sombody may want to control it for their personal set ups.

Cheers Chris smile

I think it's stuck somewhere in between. Otherwise I don't think it would have slipped by for so long. It's at a reasonable default value, but it sure would be nice to tweak it like a 565/568.1/561.

gizzE - yes I would agree that a mono source would behave as you suggest but this was "Broadcasting House" which was very left and right stereo positioning the presenter and interviewee - I did actually check this with the Direct preset.

Interesting! So the newer way the firmware handles presets on the G series and 2:5 beta broke the width setting.

If I didn't have to use bass management I would go back to 2.12.
