I feel this discussion is now a bit... sterile.

We can even start discussing something more obvious: the lack of support for HDMI (yes I know ther is the HD621).

When one shops for a high-end processor, and finds one without HDMI, must be shocked and try to understand 'why' and 'how different is this'.

The separation of video (say 'pure audio processor') is a bit out of question (IMO) as most G units do have (analog) video switching and functionality.

I made my choice (861 and looking to get a HD621) and am happy with it, but in the knowledge. On the other hand, the dealer in question must have informed better its customer, or accept a change now in good conditions (be it an upgrade to 861, or a change in direction/maker).

Analogue video doesn't spray RF around like digital video frequencies do.

But surely, such a clever company as Meridian, should be able to find a solution for that.

The current difference to an all-in-one solution is only 2 pieces of sheet metal and a seperate power supply......

For the G-series an all-in-one SSP is needed to bring Meridian back in the mid-high-end SSP market. My experience is that people are not interested in a seperate HDMI solution. They dismiss Meridian fairly quickly on this and look futher to Classe, top-line Denon etc.

I agree, even if they basically just fit a HD621 into a G68 (with internal 7.1 wiring) it would be an improvement, especially for most people who don't know Meridian's little foibles.

I'm just hoping that someone at the mothership is aware of the way in which their products are or can easily be seen by people who don't know the brand terribly well.

Excellent engineering, but I do think there's some interesting decisions made in the product management area smile

I agree. It's crazy. Used to be a lot of argument to have the power supply external yet Meridian puts switching power supplies inside the box. It was great they did the HD621 for backwards compatibility but going forward it should be built in. It's nice that it HD621 is seperate as far as HDMI may change but isn't that what the card based preamps was supposed to handle?

It also adds a lot of confusion for folks setting up the system, that alone would be a good reason to integrate it.

Their top DVD players have HDMI and can run stand alone (analog or DSP). Does that imply they have been crompromised?

I agree with a number of posters that this line has run its course but let me wrap up my portion of this thread. I joined this forum when I discovered that the new G68 that I had just purchased didn't have the 7.1 discreet surround that I thought it had. I won't recap this column but the short version is that a contractor/installer for my dealer/friend told me the G68 had 8+2 independent inputs so I could achieve my desired results of 7.1 plus 2 front channels in zone 2. He was wrong. And from the Meridian literature, I was unable to extricate myself from his mistake.

In the end I stretched and Meridian reached out and we came to a mutually agreeable price on a new 861 v6. So in about 3 weeks we will do a swap and I will be the happy owner of a piece of equipment that is everything I wanted and more.

Let me state again the Meridian-America team has been fast, friendly and fair to me. My dealer/friend received a morderate retraining phone conversation with Atlanta and he will buy me dinner at Lowry's Prime Rib in Beverly Hills. From my point of view - I'm happy.

Hi Gary,

That's very good news. I'm really pleased your journey has led to a "happy" end.
You will be blown away with the 861v6 it is that good and I only have a 5.0 system smile

I look forward to reading your experiences with it once all setup.

Regards,
Carl

I must say I'm quite jealous of your mega-system, though I'm still happy with mine smile
