So I have to pay when friends visits my house and listen to my party music ? No! Don't let Ronnie scare you. Nic You say that with such authority and yet with ignorance of the reality of the real world "ethics" of these companies Our company has a fleet of company cars. About 10 months ago, we were approached by IMRO. They are claiming an Annual Fee per Car, as obviously "the car radio and CD player will be used to provide a Public Performance" of their Artists' material." We are currently in legal negotiations with them, as I know many other companies in the same position are. You reply to Robert is obviously incorrect, as there are already pending Claims and Cases for that EXACT scenario in the UK and the US Try to be informed before you speak

Snipped your largely sensible post above. It's not really a matter of "bias". I can see your point when it comes to mainstream pop, which is obviously priced to screw over loyal fans and kids who know no better. The pricing may be arguably just as immoral as the illegal copying. My beloved Southpark covered the subject nicely: http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/103759 (The last line is particularly delicious in the context, but it just doesn't apply outside mainstream pop.) But when it comes to classical and even jazz, which work in an entirely different economic system (even from EMI, pressings of 500 for a classical CD are commonplace), every sale counts directly towards whether the artist will ever make another record. This even goes for companies and artists who are major in their field, but who in comparison to popstars are tiny specks. (For example, I happen to know that the Pollini/Abbado Beethoven set on DG, which is at least 15 years old now, has still not yet broken even...)

The clip before: http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/154129 I think I can see Robert getting this kind of treatment. Don't anyone mention the Simpsons, I'll just laugh. And not in a good way.

Mainstream Pop????
Just browse some recent interviews from Bob Dylan, Neil Young or Bruce Springsteen to see what they think about their previous Labels handles their Legacy Recordings and Royalties. Hardly Pop Music
Search out Interviews with the Family Members of Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Chuck Berry and many others of the Chess label to see how they feel about the money that continues to be made from their loved one's music, with ZERO Royalties being paid to them. Ditto to many from the Motown label
As I said, HUGE Respect for the Artists but very little for the Companies and alleged Ethics to both the Artists and the Consumer.
And being Anti Media Company does NOT make me Pro Media Sharing, which I despise

References please, as I wish to be as "informed" as you so that I can have as high a horse. I have a huge amount of sympathy for your legal problem. This kind of nonsense doesn't seem to have got to continental Europe yet.

I'll dig out the links later when I have time, but it applies across The US, the UK and Europe. These companies are just following each others lead
Beats me why you would be surprised by the Party Music situation, when they go after the Singing Girl packing boxes, or a Trainer playing music for her Horses.
if those are valid, then Robert's Party Music is an easy one.

I just had dinner with two other pianists, one of whom recorded for RCA until 1961 and then Columbia/Sony after that until now. The bizarre cases of which you speak are certainly not being done in our name.
Best Nic

A really, really interesting discussion but(!) can we perhaps not completely lose sight of the original question(s)...
Many thanks,

Zander As a starting point, why not try talking to these guys http://www.podserve.co.uk/index.htm Their Data Grooming Service seems to be barking up the right tree and they might use the AMG database on request

Ronnie,
Many thanks. I've already started talking to them. They haven't done a Sooloos project yet and their 1/CD seems unmovable but they are friendly and open to new ideas.
Ideally, I'd like to use someone that has experience of data prep specifically for Sooloos - there *must* be quirks that are unique to Sooloos and it would be good for me not to have to pioneer.
So, again, my question is, is there anyone out there who has experience of a ripping company specifically with Sooloos in mind?
