Also, if you looked at the HD621 specs (or read the manual without being particularly anal), you'd see two 8-channel digital outputs as the headline items.

Two by 6-Channel Inputs is a bit of a give away, especially if one reads Specs for a living wink

Of course, Meridian should have redesigned the G68 to take 8 channel Inputs as part of the recent changes

More importantly, your dealer should have understood what you were looking for and pointed you in the right direction

However, when it's your money, you also have to take some of the responsibility of making sure that a particular product will do what you want it to do

Yes, I can read and I can count. What do I read? I read "a dozen SPDIF digital inputs" I read "eight stereo analogue inputs" and I read "all inputs are reconfigurable for an incredible degree of flexibility." one configuration for the digital is of course the "six of which can be configured as up to two 6-channel inputs.

Yes it is my money. And I take responsibilty for it but I should have a reasonable expection of clarity from Meridian. We have a saying "you can shear a sheep many times but you can only skin him once".

Did Meridian really work that hard to deceive me? I think, I hope, Meridian is better than that.

I understand that somewhere there may be something that really sticks out and says there is no discrete 7.1. I read, I did not see.

Next argument.

Yes the Meridian Processors are able to Synthesize a 7.1 Surround Soundfield from a 5.1 Soundtrack and indeed have been able to do this since about 1998

The question here relates to the ability of the G68 to accept a 7.1 DISCRETE Soundtrack from a Bluray disc.

The Meridian 861v6 can accept a 7.1 Native Soundtrack, but the G68 & G61 cannot.

All can accept a 5.1 and in turn Synthesize a 7.1 Soundfield

I hear what you are saying but I have a hard time blaming him. We do go back a long ways, but not with Meridian, and I have tremendous respect for his knowledge and judgement. He would view me as "not an unsophisticated buyer" so maybe our conversations could have been more detailed since this is my first venture into Meridian.

I would hazard a guess that there are a number of Meridian owners that think their G68 is 7.1 discrete. But I am sure they are filled with bliss.

Yes, it can, and I'm sure it works wonderfully. But if the source is 7.1 you'd not expect to throw two channels away and then have a guess as to what was there.

I do understand the issue smile

Does it do it just as good as the Logic7? logic 7 on movie, I think blends the surround-back extremly well.

If your pre-pro can "only" handle 6 channels you would configure the source (Bluray, whatever) to output 6 channels. It should synthesise the sides and rears of a 7.1 mix down to 5.1 so the "loss" is in positional information rather than sound. If a Bluray player cannot do this then every 5.1 set-up in which it is placed would be similarly compromised, regardless of whether it is Meridian, Onkyo, etc.

I would love for some-one to have the conversation above with, for instance, Sony if their player couldn't perform that synthesis. I wonder if a director would come on the conference call with the dis-gruntled purchaser?

Don't forget that HDMI is not a "dumb" connection.

If you have the HD621 set to output 6 channels to your G68 then it will tell the BD player to output 6 channels and override your BD default settings. You might think you are transmitting 7.1 from the player but you won't be.

Can't your dealer not help you out in changing the G unit for a 861v6 against dealer cost ?
Perhaps it will cost you some extra, but it would solve the problem.

Exactly, that's why I said transmit.

For reproduction you can use as many speakers as you like with the correct matrix; the more speakers the more accurate the reproduction in theory. I'ld assume that's one of the reasons that Meridian kit has tended to have more outputs than the competition.

Does it have more outputs? As far as I can see, it tops out at 7.3 which is only 2 subwoofers more than any current AVR.
