So who was it who claimed that FLAC was better (than ALAC) again? Can you point us to a previous post?
Cheers

I've seen that more than once in the Computer Audiophiles forum (a place I quickly left for various reasons). The mechanism proposed was that the extra processing of decoding ALAC causes more noise in the computer and therefore increases the jitter of the digital output.
I'd like someone who claims that 24/96 of a REDBOOK CD RIP sounds better than 16/44 as served up via macmini or any other methed into SAME setup do a detailed A/B comparison. That'd be fun. Scratching head That was exactly the point George. In the vein of your MP3 vs FLAC test But of course some in here claimed that the FLAC was better, the very same one's that defend their 80x spinners
So, in other words, he believes that 24/96 Music originated from the Masters doesn't REALLY sound any better / different to the same music at 16/44................. Enough said

Simply trying to follow what's being written here confirms that I should go for a Sooloos system because a) I'm a committed Meridian fan and b) I want a simple system to work simply for me and the rest of the family. I just wish there was video (DVD & BR) solution available... (NB. Also a committed Apple fan - some would say certifiable - and I work for a software company so not exactly afraid of computers.) I love the idea that different lossless compression systems may sound different - after all we know "bits is bits", so once it's digital it must sound the same... and upsampling can't improve the original sound can it? Good job Meridian chose the best . Chris

I recently created a big playlist (7 hours plus)taking single tracks from about 140 albums for a party, using SB server on a PC, and it was not the slickest experience ever. Biggest problem is the delay in refreshing the web interface screen every time you click something. I use a Transporter as my most audiophile source. The sluggishness of the web interface is a grumbling annoyance (and the front panel, whilst sufficient for me once the music's playing, is a poor place to make music selections). When I'm listening more casually, and the music isn't in high resolution, I sometimes switch to a Sonos ZP80 as the front end because the Sonos Desktop Controller is so much faster. I won't consider Sooloos because • I don't want the human interface stuck on the top of my hifi stack (or stuck on top of anything), • (from this thread) the artwork issue is disappointing, • I have the computer skills (competent but not expert) not to need turnkey ease of use, • Sonos is sufficient, elegant, not too expensive and easy to use (good WAF) for the rest of the home, and • I'd rather use the money for something else audiophile. I think that probably covers many of the ideas in this thread. Regards, Peter

Supplementary to this thread, because it influences the usability of a Sooloos competitor ...
Before I pay 6 for it, does anybody know whether the iPend app is OK with a Logitech Transporter? I've scanned the app reviews and there's no mention of the Transporter. I've Googled it but without success.
Regards, Peter

Rod,
Thanks for that.
A great app! Now it's as convenient to use the Transporter as it is to use Sonos.
Regards, Peter

You are welcome Peter...now if they could amend the app. to switch the Transporter off! then it would indeed be a perfect unit

How do you turn it off? Selecting a tune and pressing 'play' turns mine on but where is the screen for turning it off? Am using the supplied remote for this at present
