A post from EngadetHD - adds weight to the argument that DVD ripping in Sooloos is unlikely - Managed Copy (SD or HD) is another question
AMX's media server line axed over DVD ripping dispute By Richard Lawler posted Jul 7th 2010 3:41PM Looks like AMX isn't eager to be next in line for a battle after Kaleidescape and Real Networks, as it's chosen to kill the MAX line of multimedia servers, aimed at storing and streaming ripped discs, primarily in digital signage environments. CEPro notes several other similar servers that chose to fade out rather than fight the DVD Copy Control Association, while Kaleidescape is apparently still tied up in the courts, we're still wondering if legit disc ripping will arrive before Managed Copy.

DE, Thanks for the update, I too was offered this service but thought it a little too expensive per CD. We have a PC (with 2 drives) and laptop at home plus I can borrow a couple extra of laptops, so once my Sooloos system is available I've elected my wife to be the CD changer Regards, Carl

Carl, I find it much easier and faster to rip using the Control:10 rather than Control:PC. (and even more 'wife friendly!') I'd suggest not trying to make simultanious rips on different PCs, I found it just slowed each individual import and didn't achieve a deal. Rick

The Import4 would be way out of my reach. Did anyone consider Import1? So much cheaper and would still help the workflow a lot...
I am not sure it is still available though.

(I'm not sure it ever has been available since Meridian took over) I am considering investing in an Import 4 and maybe renting it out for say a week at a time? Rick

Rick I use Control Mac with a Blu-ray burner It's over twice as fast as my Control:10. So the speed of ripping with Control:PC/Mac is dependent of your drives buffer and speed! Just my 2cents PerS

Fair enough, but "providing better quality" doesn't entirely answer my question. I was just interested in the Sony changer because of solving the space problem. If you have precise criticisms of it that would be interesting. But it's no big deal, and anyway, is hopelessly off-topic... There really isn't much to say in addition to what I said. It doesn't have issues with stability or anything, they work for what they were build for. The only issue I have with the changers is, they're not providing the best possible audio and video quality. Oppo and Dune simply have better av quality, which I'm not willing to sacrifice. I'd rather stand up and change discs myself as long as I get better av quality. But that's just me of course.

I was informed by the manufacturer (MF Digital) that the import 4 is specific for the way Sooloos imports FLAC files. It is not usable for other systems or formats. There are other units that rip FLAC (as well as MP3, apple lossless, etc) files to hard disc and those are then transferrable to Sooloos as well as any other music programs, servers or NAS. I have used the MF Digital Ripstation for this purpose and have about 3 thousand CD's ripped and ready to transfer. However, it is a 2 stage import process. I do find that files are imported into Sooloos a lot faster than ripping CD's. Attached is a link to their site. http://www.ripstation.com/Regards, Wayne

What format were you wanting to rip, and for what system? Rick I would also think that if the right software can be installed, it should work with NAS and other systems. I'm just not sure how easy or difficult that would be. I can say that the rip station is just like any windows PC and various software is easy to install. Getting that software to work the robotics properly may be more challenging. Wayne
