Kaleidescape has lost a lawsuit but I believe they are still battling in court.

Ripping Bluray is also easy. If they go video, i expect HD resolution, not SD.

Standard NAS would be good, as the current solutions do not scale that well it seems. (i am over 40 TB already)

Not that i will go for this solution. I just hook up a bare e-sata drive to a player and select a bitmap and the movie starts. Good enough for me.

In reality this is no problem, since ripping a DVD is not difficult at all (lots of tools available) and putting them on your NAS can't be a dealbreaker.
AMX have just ceased production of their MAX DVD storage system for the same reason

If none of these other companies have hurdled the legal problem successfully, then I can't imagine Meridian can, despite their status in the digital world. My deduction would be that the rumour was the result of a misunderstanding of some sort.

So we are left with Control 15 with disc inside as the only remotely substantial rumour?

Not necessarily. Supporting Sooloos integrated SD or HD playback from your _own_ video storage device would skirt the issue for them, no ?

Like evdberg says: just the ripping part is illegal.

Supporting the playback of a DVD or Blu-Ray files and/or structure is not.

Agree. Surely being able to play HD and SD video files isn't against the law. How a user goes about getting such material is up to the user.

If it was an issue then how would quicktime and WMP be able to operate on PC's and Mac's ?

It would lend itself to a more open storage/playback architecture and that for other reasons might be a better solution for many of us. Full blown closed Sooloos for the customer that doesn't want to know how it all works.

Put another way...is Dune3.0 illegal because it can play video files ? I doubt it.

I can't see Sooloos using an 'open' NAS rather than its own storage solutions, but I may be wrong.

maybe one silly question here?

Why its so important to have an open system here?
Are the lower prices a fact,
when you compare the TwinStore to
a pc storagedrive plus a PC ?

On the control side Sooloos is open-you dont have to buy a Control:10-
and refer to the rumors with new Control:10
-except the price- what is THEN a real disadvantage?

Dont misunderstand me here,
I also have to count my money very hard-
is there a REAL disadvantage left ?

Please explain SLOWLY and with patient.

Thanks

Robert

Sure, many of us here could do that. But some of us don't want to have to, and/or have wives/families who can't. It's those people that Sooloos are for, not people who are happy to put it together themselves and "select a bitmap"!...

Hi All, I'm extremely new here and have been contemplating purchasing a Sooloos system for some months now. After reading the posts so far, it seems that I should wait for the new products to be released before jumping the gun? What do you guys things? I'll be needing the Control:10 and the TwinStore.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated!
