I generally put them on the top of the rack, or 'modify' the rack uprights.
I guess they would fit between if the outer case is removed, but this generally doesn't conform to my customers requirements.

Yes, I had to physically remove part of the side rail in order to get the non-rack mount chassis into the rack. also, You need to use the kind of shelf that connects to the side of the side rails rather than the front. By doing it this way, the 861 only eats up 4 rack heights.
