A question for those Hikers from the USA that have never visited the UK: what kind of climate do you believe is prevalent in this country?

The reason for asking is that while in my local pharmacy today an American women exclaimed that she couldn't believe she was having to buy sunscreen during her visit to these shores.

My wife's from ND, she thinks our weather is mild and boring.

Warm in the Winter and cold in the Summer, compared the extremes of temperature over there, it is a bit mild here.

Steve.

P.S. For the curious, I've been there in the winter, -10F and was told it's mild out! I've been there in the Summer +100F +90% Humidity and was told it's not that warm...
My Wife tells me of -40F Winters and 8ft+ of Snow, when the London Underground grinds to a halt when an inch of snow falls, she just laughs at me.

North Dakota (practically Canada).

Sorry, I've had to learn all the abbreviations for US States, so it just comes natural to put ND instead of North Dakota.

The weather really is that extreme, to be honest, it's horrible and it literally changes from Winter to Summer or Summer to Winter in a week, so no mild bits in between.
It's the same for most of the Mid West.
It's also Mosquito Hell in the Summer.

-10F = -23.3C
-40F = -40C
100F = 37.7C
90% Humidity = So humid that sweat won't evaporate so you just get hotter.

My wife is from IN (make them look it up) and the weather there is also pretty special. I prefer it here (almost Alsace).

We have maratime climate.
We exist half tween pole and equator ,in the temperate Atlantic and the miracle Gulf Stream
They continental.
This winter we had a hint of the continental.
Americans seem always to be amazed about something
Our education is parochial ,I presume theirs is too.

I lived in the UK for 2 1/2 years in the 90's ... most of my life in the U.S.

When I was there - there was a long drought - so hot, sunny summer! (like this one?)

but normally I found the weather in London mild, pleasant, but cloudy too much, especially in winter (not enough sun for me in the winter)

London is 51 degrees north. Bismarck, ND is 47 degrees north, Calgary, AB, Canada is 51 north. Portland, ME (also maritime) is 44 north, and considerably colder than the UK. The Gulf Stream really is a miracle for northern Europe.
