Yes, Trifield extracts ambient sounds and plays them back through the surround channels. It is very subtle and you only notice it when you turn off the surround speakers!

I find the rear channel contribution varies considerably between recordings -from virtually zero to clearly audible. Not sure what algorithm determines that.

As subtle as the rears are, I'd take Trifield rears over a Trifield center any day. I might say different if I had a center 6k and/or a width adjustment that worked.

Do the rear channel filter settings on Trifield still work? I have to confess it's ages since I did any playing with those.

If you are upsampling, the 568.1 won't output anything on the sides/rears, which may explain why you're not hearing anything.

I must have at least 8 years listening to 7.1 Trifield. I started out with 5.1 Trifield but found adding the sides a significant improvement. Sides and rears are subtle enough that you don't sense they are playing. Turn them off and you immediately notice they are gone! Trifield sides and rears add ambience to a recording from where it should be coming from instead of all the recording ambience from the front of a soundstage. The subtle nature of the ambient field coming from the sides and rears is a good approximation of real ambience.
