Zander,

A comparison of functions would be very useful, I agree. I don't think it exists unfortunately.

Personally, I think the Control:10 interface is an important part of the system 'experience' - I can't list all the features that appear on the C10 but which are not on the iPod / iPad / Control:PC / Control:Mac, but I don't think I'd get half the pleasure or use of the system if I didn't have the C10. (And no, I'm not in the Meridian sales dept!) This is very much a personal opinion though, so it'd be interesting to hear from any who use Sooloos without the C10.

Main features that come immediately to mind are:
- CD loading (OK, this can be done on Control:PC and Control:Mac, but not iPad / iPod)
- Browsing albums by CD cover artwork only possible on C10
- 'Focus' feature (eg show all albums released in the 1980's in the Ska genre, or show me all the music which Brian Burton produced) only available on C10
- iPad / iPod / C:PC / C:Mac can access previously saved Focuses (Foci?) but they can only be created and saved on C10

(I haven't seen or used the Crestron interface, so can't comment on that.)

Hopefully you can find a friendly dealer who can demonstrate to you without pressure... I'm sure there are many in the UK who'd be willing to help if you're ever over here.

Regards,

Ian

Nick,

You've got me sussed! Sooloos will likely be my first foray into served music. I guess that's why I'm drilling down into some of the more esoteric features based on how I think we'd likely use the system.

I am a long standing user of M Digital Theatre and my music hobby is at an embryonic stage - now that my kids are older, I'll get the time to be more self-indulgent music-listening wise.

Ian,

You'd think M would compile a comparison table not least because as the C10 is the most feature-rich interface it would tip people like me over to certainly buying a c10 vs. not.

I'll almost certainly get a C10, not least for the Speakerlink to DSPs connectivity. It would also, I assume, be more convenient to rip the occasional CD via the C10 rather than schlep around on the PC. Certainly the idea of simply inserting the disc into the C10 slot and magic happens is far more appealing than cranking up software on a PC every time.

I am 100% certain that the iPad will be our primary interface. A tethered C10 is such a chore and to my mind negates most of the benefits of the UI.

The reason I mention Crestron is that I have half a dozen wired and wireless panels in the house. Getting to try this ahead of a system purchase is unlikely methinks.

It's time to gird my loins, put on a trench coat, sunglasses, false beard and a fedora and take a stroll to my 'friendly' dealer...
