I've had the time to go back and do some more listening to the 800v3 (with upsampling shut off connected via SPDIF- MD2 ) and compare it to the Oppo (connected HDMI to the HD621) and I still feel that the Oppo holds its own. I have a feeling that the SL connection on the HD621 may be responsible for the improved sound as I feel that movies through the Oppo have also improved over v4.

Regards
Joe

Over the weekend I had a chance to listen to the v6 with multichannel material.

In prior posts I commented on the large increase in information density vs. the v4 for straight music material (generally Redbook CDs): better imaging, more solidity to piano's, more uncovering of layers of sounds.

Well, multichannel / surrounds benefit too. The surround channels sound more "alive" and there is more detail coming in the surround field. It's a noticeable difference, of a magnitude greater than I'd expected. (And yes, everything was calibrated the same using a calibrated mic, so it's not in any level matching.)

I played some DVD with DTS on my Oppo Bd 83 last night and wanted to know if going direct to 861 V6 vs going via HD621 will make any difference so I set the Oppo to output bitstream via HDMI and the 861 V6 DTS logo lighted up but the 861 did not upsample and the speakers did not show the yellow bars. I have set HS Y on all DSP preset. IS this supposed to be this way?

Yes. The 861v4/v6/G6x/56x cannot decode DTS (or DD) and upsample at the same time. It's an architectural limitation and a weakness that should have been addressed (IMO). I'd be interested in your results though, either way.

Thank for clarifying that. I prefer the Oppo to decode the DTS into PCM and for HD HD621 to apodise and Upsample, sounds noticeably smoother without loosing details.

Not sure what the sound will be like if the Oppo goes to 861 via SPDIF instead of HDMI to hd HD621 followed by mmhr to 861, too lazy to try, maybe will do it in the future.

It is thought in some circles that apodizing in 861 is superior to that in HD621 so you may benefit from trying that configuration to get the most out of your investments in this equipment.

But it would not help his DTS because it can't upsample/apodize and decode. Seems really odd after all these years the same limitation exists.

If you think listening to music is fun, try learning an instrument.
