What was missing, as far as I was concerned, was any sense that anything at all of importance was at stake. All the budget seems to have been front-loaded on the castle assault that takes place in France. From then on, everything feels small-time. The sheriff of Nottingham was a complete non-entity lacking any hint of menace. One yearned for Alan Rickman. The beastly Anglo-French "traitor" manages to destabilize the country with just 200 hundred men. The northern barons that are about to rebel against King John's taxes consisted of just two decrepit old geezers who were barely able to stand under the weight of their own chain mail.
As for Russel Crowe - and as someone else said in relation to Gordon Brown - it was as if, were he ever to smile, a fairy somewhere might die. His rallying speeches feel preachy rather than rousing. He suffers no real reversal of fortune and everything just trots along nicely to its predetermined outcome. The French are defeated in a battle devoid of any tactics; King John, now secure, reneges on his word as everyone knows he will; and Robin is then made an outlaw because the king is jealous of his martial charisma.
Disappointing.
