That's a good point! I bet the v6 has the horsepower to do it.

here's an even better scenario : HD621 passes HD codecs to processor (like it does with DTS and DD currently), processors are updated to decode them, and G series are updated to pass the full 8 channels through 3 inputs of MD1 and 1 input of MD2 ... couldn't this be done? :-) :-) !!

Possibly but Meridian won't. That will stand firm with the "The decoding should be done in the source player".

The v6 has the same number of MIPS as the v4.
However, more DSPs (or just faster ones) can be added to increase the "horse power" if/should M require them.

I see it now, .... Meridian Pimped my 861 smile

Not sure about the insides, but lime green is possible... See the back right speaker!

ideally, decoding would be done in the source, but some sources don't have any decoding ability, not or sufficient ability to decode HD codecs. in those cases with Meridian you lose out as you end up with lossy codecs instead and I'm in that situation right now with a network media streamer. it's not a big deal at the moment, but I see it getting more so as time goes on. right now, Meridian have the Sooloos audio ripper and player. surely there will be pressure in the future to have such a system for DVDs and Blurays? will Meridian then start supporting HD codecs, if even in just the Sooloos system?

I have to wonder where this refusal to support HD codecs comes from though? they support HDMI 1.3 so it's not a technical connectivity problem. they don't require old DD or DTS to be decoded in the player, as many players could do. is it just not wanting to pay the licence costs? is it just an idealogical stance?

why not give us the flexibility to decode where we want?

also, wouldn't audio in encoded form be more resistant to jitter (similar to how MHR is more resistant than raw PCM)?

I think one reason is the interactive support needed in some of the newer BD stuff.

That seems like a fair reason. Dave says better than I did what my point is- while its a small group of us- there is a little market for a box that takes HDMI bitstream HD audio in, decodes to PCM, and then sends it out over HDMI.

well, they could recommend use of LPCM and yet allow use of bitstreaming for when there's no other choice...

dave

PS. another good example being the Denon 2500bt. no onboard HD decoding so connected to a Meridian setup you'd only get the lossy "core" audio.

David, one thing I forgot to mention is the Dune streamer will convert to PCM and I am very happy with it so far. Shoot me a PM if you want to discuss further.
