I think evdberg could have worded that better.

It would be great to compare a 861V4 with the +3dB tweak and 861V6 (no tweak).

No G68 is needed.

Some of us are pretty amazed at the improvement on a G68/861V4 for a slightly cheaper price smile

Ah right Sorry Robert, i am as tweaky as the rest of you wink i had applied the famous mod for listening to both v4 and v6. As i had heard benefits on my v4 at home smile

I simply didnt have time to compare v4 with +3db vs v6 without +3db at the customer...

However i have been soak testing a v6 this evening, before i take it 500 miles! (hence the time i am still up!!) and have compared both, i can tell you i still think v6 without the +3db (and so does my wife) sounds better than a v4 with +3db, to me its bass control, timbre and depth, but others may well hear different.

Add the 3db to the v6 and its the same demo as v4 vs v6 without or v4 vs v6 with. Does that make sense?

Yes and No.

Yes, in that I would hope v6 doesn't have this little "artifact".

No, in that if Meridian did "fix it" in v6 I would hope an immediate fix would have come out for old processors.

No, in that I believe an ideal fix (one deserved of a well over $100k system) needs DSP speaker firmware update to do it perfectly. We are talking about perfection here that folks are paying mega bucks for. Even on "old" stuff.

Can you bring this concern up to Merdian.

Are you saying you tested the v6 with the +3dB mod and it had the same improvement in quality as the v4 and G68? I better hope the v6 has the same 'issue', otherwise this may have some serious implications ...

No - he said he didn't have time to tweak the v6.

What would be REALLY interesting is a side by side comparison of the latest G61/68 speakerlink processors into SL DSP speakers with the 861v6. I found a huge difference to my previous setup (see thread) and the 64K dollar question is just how much better for the substantial additional cost would the 861 be?

That's not how I read it. He said he didn't have time at the customer to do +3dB tests. But he gave the impression he tried a bunch of stuff at home.

Also unless you go to great trouble hooking both systems your comparing to the speakers at once for instant comparisons then you depend on memory.

If HD621 Direct to DSP-6000 sounds the same as G68 w/+3dB in Direct Preset (does to my deaf ears). And he is saying 861V6 wo/+3dB sounds better and a 861V6 w/+3dB sounds better still.

Not to mention folks believe an 861V4 (let's say with +3dB) is better still than a G68 (lets say with +3dB) to begin with.

That's like 3 levels of performance above an HD621 direct wired to DSP-6000 (because IMHO a G68 can be that clean). All compared likely by memory, man I can't even remember what I had for dinner. Perhaps with 7.2K/8.2K's and 18 year old ears these differences in performance are possible.

So George did you hear even the slightest difference between your 861 and g68, dinner and 3db tweak notwithstanding?

I think in some way youre always depending on memory and thats where the room for debate comes in. My take is everyone is seemingly hearing a nice improvement- which should be the case- otherwise the "Emperor" would have no clothes. I've been told my V6 is on the way.

Best regards,

What BAV says about the 861 is similar to what I found with the 808.3. However, I did not feel the need for blind testing! I would expect 100% accuracy in detecting which player was being used.

Is there any reason why the 861 jumped from Version 4 to V6?
Is V5 reserved for an apodising upgrade to the V4?
