Have just been looking at the AC12 user manual to try and get an idea of the consequences of mixing speaker types if I upgrade the processor.
The examples only show a four speaker system, this leaves the following questions
If you have sides and rears do you need 2 times AC12
If you have say a 5500 centre and 7200 left and right, do you need an AC12 for the centre.
None of the Meridian subs have SpeakerLink, would you need an AC12 for this.
For each AC12 you would also need very short cables to connect to the speakers.
The manual for the AC11 is very detailed but the AC12 is lacking unless there is another version somewhere.
With my existing 7.1 system of which only 2 speakers have SpeakerLink I could need up to 4 AC12's plus cables as a worse case scenario, that's a potential couple of grand. Even if I need say only two thats still about a grand with cables, for probably minimal benefit to me apart from my time.
This is quite a barrier to upgrading unless you uprafe speakers at the same time which is very expensive, if you upgarde the speakers later than the cost of the AC12 and cables is lost cost. I would have thought that if Meridian wished to encourage migration to the SpeakerLink path they would have priced the AC12 closer to cost, in the longer term they will make money selling high end kit, not AC12's.
I may have my facts wrong, has anyone actually implement a mixed AC12 sytem yet.
