I dug this out of my collection yesterday and haven't played it for years. My abiding memory before playing this was of an album that was fairly badly mastered. So why the recommendation? Well, in the interevning years, my HiFi has been improved and it really has made a difference - the "murk" I remember wasn't there at all.

What you have is a fairly simple recording of a lineup of 4 players: organist, electric pianist, bassist / vocalist and drummer. Although this is not a great 'audiophile' recording, it has bags of atmosphere and detail - enough to give you the 'in the studio with them' feel.

As for the music, well, typical 1970 rock (some might call it prog), keyboard driven. really a less intense version of their Charisma stablemates Van der Graaf Generator. Well worth a punt for 4 if you like music from that era.

Hi, My Friend Gary Bennett has a New Record/CD out on the Rega Label (Rega Research Ltd).
"A Bend in the River". This was recorded in an Analog enviroment for Vinyl, but a CD has to be released also.
It is a collection of songs you may well know but arrangments that will surprise you.
Some of the singers had not heard even the originals before, so there is a fresh approach to the material.

We played Side one on my F80 (His first experiance of the device), Needless to say, He was blown away at how good his own work sounded on CD.
Side 2 we played on my main system, A bigger sound this time, he is getting the Meridian thing I think.

Give it a try if you would.... I have no Financial intrest in this, Just the pleasure of promoting good and interesting Music.

Enjoy, Chris smile

I mentioned Porcupine Tree's ' Anesthetise ' Bluray earlier , Ive since seen and heard it and it is as good as Id hoped for , features some rarely performed live tracks , and is doing very well in video charts around Europe .

Also featured on this page is an 320kbps MP3 download of another 2 hour show from the same tour ' Atlanta ' which is being made available to raise money for Mick Karn ( formerly of Japan and others ) who has sadly , recently been diagnosed with cancer and the Macmillan charity .

Very worthy causes both.

Battles - Mirrored - Warp Records, 2007
[Linked Image from theonlythingiknowforsure.files.wordpress.com]

I picked this up last week after watching the videos for their two singles "Atlas" and "Tonto". You might recognise "Atlas" from being used in the advert for Honda's Civic Type R advert run in the UK.

Why recommend? Well, the amount of musicianship on display on this CD is phenomenal. The music grooves, veers and hauls in a way that only music played by a band who's players understand each other empathically. If I had to make a comparison to other bands (and their combination of guitar and hi-tech makes their music difficult to compare) I would have to say they come close to some of the polyrhythmic approach of "Beat" / "Discipline" era King Crimson.

Recording quality is spot on with the full frequency range being used - plenty of bass if that's your thing. And a very clean recording with each instrument being given it's space.

Software - Chip Meditation (Part 1) Innovative Communications, 1985

[Linked Image from discogs.com]

Software is the name for the project led by German author, artist and photographer, Michael Weisser. On this album, his ideas are realised by composer / musician, Peter Mergener.

This is an album of electronic music that has beena favourite of mine for the last 20 years. Although taking inspiration from the early electronic music artists such as Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze, this album is not their ideas recycled but goes to a different place. More melodic and less bombastic than TD / KS the music creates an enormous soundscape to drift off into but avoids many of the usual "New Age" cliches that music designed to immerse yourself in can so easily fall into. The opening track "Julia's Dream" is one of my most favourite electronic music tracks with it's beguiling mix of melody, sequence and atmosphere.

Sound quality is paramount with all Software's releases (as it is with all Innovative Communications releases). It sounds like Peter Mergener thinks in 3D when he mixes as the album doesn't suffer from the very flat soundstage that you often get from recording keyboards plugged straight into the mixing desk. The end result is a record that is the aural equivalent of a warm bath (if that doesn't sound too cheesy).

The CD has been out of print for a while but well worth searching for a copy. If you find a copy of "Chip Meditation 2", it's nearly as good.

Porcupine Tree's live album "Atlanta", 24/44.1 FLAC. Played through the optical SPDIF output into my G91 and then into my DSP7000s. Pure bliss...might be the best sound I ever heard! Download from here (10 quid): http://www.burningshed.com/store/porcupinetree/collection/169/2213/

Some of you may know I picked up a Fiddle about 2 years ago. And I have never enjoyed Music as much as do now. It's taken things to a whole new level.

These are a couple of tunes from members of a fiddle forum.

You won't find them on CD, DVD-A, SACD or Blu-Ray

Yes, they are 128kps MP3. Does it really matter? They sound absolutely wonderful to my ear.

- Fiddler (IMHO)

If you think listening to music is fun, try learning an instrument.

Yes, decent video quality and great sound quality for a live album. Not to mention the music quality.
