Hi all,

I'm about to buy a Sooloos music server and wonder if it is possible to mount two 2 TB hard drives in a TwinStore.

The Sooloos FAQ reads: "All Meridian Sooloos units with drive bays are supplied complete with tested drives, to guarantee performance on shipment, but in the event of a drive failure, any 7200rpm drive with SATA power and data connections can be used as a replacement. Replacement drives can also be purchased from Meridian Sooloos."

I have found 2 TB hard drives on New Egg that are 7200 rpm with SATA power and data so according to this they should work, however, I have been unable to find any specific mention of 2 tb drives online.

Could someone help me with this so that I can avoid buying 2 TwinStores?

Thanks,

Nanda

What make are the hard drives?

I asked a Meridian rep about this.

You can replace the drives(1TB) in TwinStore with 2TB.
If you do, you do not get Meridian support if they fail.
Meridian tests of 2TB drives found them to be unreliable.

Use Hitachi if considering 2TB.

Last time I spoke with M about this, they did not recommend 2TB on reliability grounds. They also recommend commercial enterprise grade rather than consumer grade drives.

Thanks,

I've decided to try 2 Western Digital 2 TB Enterprise grade hard drives:

http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digit...lectronics&qid=1267472180&sr=8-1

Considering that the drives are mirrored, I think that the risk of a catastrophic failure of both hard drives at the same time is outweighed by the reward of avoiding the extra $3200.00 for a TwinStore.

I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Thanks again for the advice!

A bit late I guess, but when I buy drives of the same model, I tend to get them from different vendors to ensure that they are from different batches.

Out of curiosity, do you have more than 2400 CDs? I highly recommend getting a separate NAS and backing up the TwinStore after it's loaded, just in case ...

I don't have more than 2400 CDS....but I'm moving in that direction. Too many times I have said "X MB/GB/TB!?! I'll never fill that up!" Just thinking forward.

As for the NAS, thanks for the suggestion. Probably not a bad idea.

Best,

Nanda

If you do the NAS, then you'll have a separate backup in case the 2TB drives are troublesome. You can easily remedy any problems by moving to 1TB drives and adding a TwinStore for extra storage.

I have a few hundred CDs to go before I get to 2400 but I'm hopeful that M comes up with ways to support more media to fill the space (multichannel, video).

Bill

Hi Crion,

Why do you recommend the Hitachi over any other?

Thanks

Most other 2TB have agressive powersaving features to be called Green drives. This can confuse raid/disk controllers and the disk gets locked out because it doesn't respond as the Controller expects. This is apart from any reliability standpoint.

Hitachi drives works very well in a RAID setting even with powersave features enabled, thus they should be excellent for Sooloos as well.

Also the Hitachi drives are mechanicly engineered to be put in large disk arrays because of their tie with IBM Enterprise Storage and not just single desktops.
