In the spirit of the recent iPad thread I was wondering about the optimum combination of Apple products and Meridian. If we assume that the objective is to get 24 / 96 and standard red book CD 2 channel into a Meridian DSP system what do we use?

In order to maximise sound quality we would want an 808i.2 as a preamp, and to provide processing: de-jittering, and apodising and upsampling where appropriate. [In a month we might specify the 808.3 if it can be determined that it provides a superior solution to the 808i.2]

We would want ease of use, ample storage capacity and backup, preferably automatic. We would also want bit-perfect ripping as well as the capacity to download 24 / 96 material.

What would you choose?

Well the Airport Express and Apple TV are limited to 16/44, so you'd have to look at the computer range.

I'd choose a Mini (personally with a superdrive) because it's small, cheap and quiet.
I'd use whatever screen movies are watched on as the visual interface, bluetooth keyboard and mouse (Apple ones of course)and a MSR+ programmed to replicate the small apple remote.
Software would be iTunes to rip and organise, Front Row for playback.
iPod Touch if I didn't want the screen on.

The only problem is that the Apple OS doesn't automatically switch it's output's resolution and rate to suit the media being played.

Dont forget Plex.app - a very nice Media soultion for Intel Macs. Integrates very well with iTunes, iPhoto and everything else. Plugins for loads of features

iTunes doesn't support 24/96 audio. The Songbird player does:

I'd install bootcamp + Windows + dBpoweramp on a small partition to do the ripping. I've had to re-rip many CDs that I initially ripped using iTunes.

iTunes does support both 24/96 and 24/192 for Archiving purposes in Apple Lossless and AIFF Format

The Midi Output can be set to a max of 24/96 only.

Purchase High Res 24/96 2-ch Tracks from HD Tracks or Linn and then convert them to Apple Lossless for Archiving etc. as normal in iTunes

Have done this and output to a Meridian Processor and the Display shows 96khz

And you can rip DVD-As stereo/mixdowns to 24/96 WAVs, import then into iTunes and they play back fine. (I know it will do 24/96 over USB, but I haven't actually tried it with optical.)
