FYI - I am utilizing the 2nd 500GB drive as a Time Machine backup. What will you do when the drives are full? (This will happen quickly if you use it for ripped DVD playback) Steve.

The Mac Mini has 5 USB ports. So adding external USB drives is easy. I'm running 6TB of NAS at present. Not sure I'd wish to rely to that degree on external USB drives without RAID for some element of protection from disk failure, not to mention the fan noise.

The Mac Mini has 5 USB ports. So adding external USB drives is easy. I know that, my point is that paying extra for the server, with it's two small (by today's standards) internal hard drives, is limiting. If you're going to add an external, why wouldn't you just do that from the start? 1.5TB USB drives are less than �100. Plus you need an external spinner to get the CDs or DVDs onto the Mini Server. Although 500GB will hold about 1500 CDs in Apple Lossless and that might be enough, making the Mini Server perfect.  Steve.

You can connect Mac Mini to NAS RAID via Ethernet. In that case Snow Leopard Server would be useful.

I'm now running 2 of these from the USB ports. One For music files and one for Time Machine backup. They are silent in use and go to sleep when the Mini does (just like the mice in Bagpuss!). Steve.

You can always sell the Snow Leopard Server DVDs that come with the Mac Mini Server on Ebay! But then you have to buy OSX.... Steve.

It's $30 for upgrade, not a legal standalone copy.
I wonder if Meridian would consider porting the full Sooloos UI experience but actually charge say $200 for it?

It's $30 for upgrade, not a legal standalone copy. Technically yes, but I did a clean install to a formatted drive and was never asked for a previous version or anything upgradewise. I just checked and Apple doesn't offer a "full" non-upgrade version of Snow Leopard.
