I use Trifield a lot. When a walk across the front of my setup (not in normal listening) I have the impression that more energy is coming out of the centre than out of either of the main pair. Is this everyone's experience?

I always thought from the description of Trifield that the centre channel would be a subtle contribution, but it appears to be the main one, with the L and R added spacial information.

In my sitting position I find the balance perfect. I am just curious what other people's experience is.

(Makes even more sense bearing in mind the mention in another thread that the centre often gets more to do than the main pair in films.)

I set the level of the centre so it sounds the same as listening in stereo, well as close as it can.
This usually requires around 1-2 db knocked down and maybe .5 or 1.0 of depth.

I find that Trifield really focuses the main contribution in the centre channel. That's not to say that L/R only produce ambient contributions.

When I listened to Pink Floyd at Live8 (can't remember which song), I was treated to the extraordinary presentation of three different guitars, one from the left speaker, one from the middle, and one from the right. And all three guitars sounded different!

I find the default settings for Trifield are too hot on the centre channel, so I run it at -1.5db to bring it in line with the L/R. My centre sits 45cm further away from the listening position than the L/R, so that's probably in line with gIzzE's -2db figure.

When I had 5200s + 5500HC the center dominated the sound stage, I dropped it down by 1.5db (with depth at +1ms) and Trifield snapped in to focus.

However, with my new front setup a pair of 8Ks & and 7200HC I found that I'm much closer to having -0.5 to 0.0 db (I'm still playing) on the centre.

I think the key point is that with the DSP parameters esp. Trifield one needs to experiment to hit the sweet spot. I found switching between Direct & Trifield realy helped me to dial it in.

I have the 5200/5500HC as did Carl but haven't quite got the "snapping into focus" that he and others describe. Still tweaking; haven't tried both db cut and depth but now have this to test. I have changed the master setting to boundary and that has tamed 5500HC quite a bit. Thanks for the tip re depth. JimK

Your adjustment is after initial calibration, of course, which does take into account speaker distances.

Don't forget that width adjustment isn't yet working, so, it's not just level and depth that you need to adjust to find the most pleasing presentation and "snap".

I have all my DSPs set to "Free" and let MRC do the taming.

542ms - 10 filters * Default for my room, I could not hear much difference
300ms - 48 filters * A lot better
250ms - 54 filters * Sweet Spot
200ms - 52 filters * Sounded over controlled

When I eventually get a new stand sorted out; I'll recalibrate & run MRC, when the wife is out and create some filter profiles (260, 250, 240, 230, 220) and have a play.

Has anyone heard anything on Trifield getting fixed?

I also use 250ms myself and seen this value mentioned more on this forum ... I have tested multiple values, but every time I get back to 250ms.

Think I'm on 270ms myself, but it's quite a large sweet spot.
