In term of sound quality, how a 861V3 performs compared to a G68ADV ?

See main forum.

Main difference between V3 and V4 is room correction.

Main difference between V4 and V6 is well, uh, erm, gee, oh yeah some input and output cards.

This V6 seems a bit... disappointing for V4 owners and their expectations.

Depends on individual expectations! I hope Meridian does not force 861 owners to take the new "core" analog input card. If it does, the irony will not be lost on me.

You mean a single upgrade price that includes upgraded analog input cards that most don't want to spend $$ on?

Exactly. There are three "core" cards which turn a v4 into a v6. They are:

1) IE44 digital input card, including 1x MMHR, 2x SpeakerLink and 2x SmartLink inputs. Probably the most wanted option.

2) Eight channel SpeakerLink output card. Useless if you don't have SpeakerLink DSPs, but useful to many at least in conjunction with the existing SPDIF output card.

3) New analogue input card. Useless in an all-digital system.

I am confused..what is the difference between MMHR and SmartLink as I thought -- and wrongly so -- that both were CAT5 inputs for the CAT5 output on devices such as the HD621...

Smartlink refers to both the D-connector interface on the back of 568 and 598, and the 3xSPDIF (using MHR) on the back of the HD621 and G61/G68 (and the G98 too, I think). (It was originally called that because the 598 passed information about the kind of material playing to the 568 to help the processor choose the appropriate Preset.)

MMHR is the Cat5 connector which carried 8 channels in one.

I think you meant MMHR and SpeakerLink.

One (MMHR) is 8 channels (no COMs?) (HD621 out -> 861 in) Cat5
The other (SpeakerLink) is 2 channels (with COMs) (861 out -> Speakers in) Cat5
SpeakerLink also can be (808.3i out -> 861 in)

It makes sense because an 808.3i can go direct to Speakers or Through a Processor just like SPDIF did.
