I have been considering a DSP5KC but all the info I can find says it is 32kg - and the later models are heavier. I have a 557 (27kg) and occasionally think about getting a 58kg 558 ... but my stand is rated for 75kg (top shelf - that has the TV) and only (!) 25kg per shelf under.

So - what racks are people using for their heavy, heavy Meridian gear?

Mine is no slouch - the award winning Atacama Equinox AV base with 2 extra shelves. But possibly not man enough for the job. :-(

Duncan

I had a DSP5K sitting on top of a Sony CRT 36 inch TV for many years. The casing of the TV was plastic and there was minor sagging but it popped up again after a couple of weeks without the speaker. It is now sitting on top of a pair of welded Target racks on spiked wooden shelves, no problem.

My 557s (gone and missed) sat on Apollo spiked glass shelves no problem. The trick was to assemble the shelves bottom up in situ adding components onto the lower shelves, otherwise the risk of dropping a 557 onto glass was to high with inevitable consequences.

My very heavy DSP5500HC is sitting on top of a Target screw-together AV rack, again no problem, except the castors have dented the carpet rather.

Hope that helps.

I am planning to get a stand fabricated by a local welder for a 42" TV, DSP5Kc, DSP33's, 568, DVD player & HDD using rectangular section steel (which will hide the cables). The estimated cost, inc. powder coating is around 300.

You might find e-bay a better source.

I have recently picked up seven Target racks for prices between 5 and 45, all in good nick with shelves, spikes, castors, etc. Maximum journey was 90 miles (for the 5 one of course).

I have a glass and steel Soundstyle rack which seems to take everything, including a very, very heavy processor. But I think that such a resonant design is not ideal as it probably rings like a bell.

I got myself one of these:

http://www.cld-dist.co.uk/shop/hardware/rack_metal_and_doors/RMP28.html

four of these:

http://www.cld-dist.co.uk/shop/hardware/castor/HW3S.html

and a variety of these:

http://www.cld-dist.co.uk/shop/hardware/rack_shelf.html

The rack is not the sturdiest (it can be stiffened with additional panels at the back), and is completely flexible.

I also went for a Stands Unique option. Well built and they look like furniture rather than heavy engineering

I used to have Soundstyle speaker stands and they were a terrible mistake. Rang like a bell, as you described, and they looked so 80s, in a bad way.

Duncan,

this is what I have: http://www.tnt-audio.com/accessories/spider_e.html

It's very cool, easy to assemble/adapt and can carry a lot of weight (50 kg per level). There is an amp stand as an accessory that carries up to 150 kg if you need more... smile

The site of the manufacturer that offers a configurator is here: http://www.finite-elemente.de

Cheers,
Thomas

Duncan,

I use the Apollo Aria in crackled black (have 3 stands, 2 for hi-fi gear and the other for my DSP5000C speaker). Definitely recommend them as my hi-fi kit has morphed over the last few years and the Apollo kit has kept up with it (any modular racking system will do this though).

Take a look at http://www.apollohifi.co.uk/Aria/Aria.html

Keith.

I've been looking at Blok HiFi furniture.

IIRC, the shelves can hold 45 kg.

They also custom build if the racks aren't quite right.
