Sorry about my maybe stupid question: Which format is stored on a CD? Is that a WAV file? Which file format can a DSP play-is that also WAV or what? Iam a "little" confused,as M write in the Sooloos "system Primer" that the output format is WAV. But Sooloos store every music as a MP3 and FLAC file. Does that means when playing music from Sooloos the FLAC file get "live" converted to WAV ?
Can somebody bring some light in my dark tunnel ?
Thanks Robert

the audio format on CD is usually referred to as "CDDA" see : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_Disc_Digital_Audio CD rippers like dBpoweramp or EAC will extract to WAV format losslessly(and then encode to FLAC or MP3 etc). I remember reading that Sooloos will rip a CD as a single large FLAC format file, with CUE file to provide track metadata. My Sonos plays back in PCM format, 44.1kHz. through coax SPDIF . My music files are ripped as separate FLAC files using dBpoweramp. The Sonos decodes FLAC "on the fly" and produces PCM/WAV which outputs to processor. The FLAC format was designed to be able to be decoded quickly even on slow devices. Encoding is another story ...

I just had a look at tracks I had dragged directly from a CD, onto my Mac desktop. All songs are stored as .aiff

Surely CD is not a file orientated format so any track data extracted and placed in files are purely arbitrary in format and file extension?

Thanks all,
is that correct ?
files get ripped from CD(whatever format) to WAV file and encoded or compressed to FLAC and stored on a PC HD. When playing that FLAC file, the format get "live" or "real time" decoded or extended to WAV. This will go via SPDIF to the DSP.

I just had a look at tracks I had dragged directly from a CD, onto my Mac desktop. All songs are stored as .aiff The mac is not draging files off the CD. It's ripping the tracks as you drag them into it's own preferred file format. aiff is like MP3 (it's lossy). If you did that on windows you'd get wma files also like MP3.

Nope, aiff is non-compressed and lossless PCM < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aiff>. It's the Mac equivalent of .WAV.
