Before I dive in for F80, just like to clarify a few things: my plan is to use my Mac mini as a media server which will output through Toslink digital signal to F80's mini Toslink port. The question is that i have some 24/96 format matierial in my itune library which i am not sure will be played by F80 because i could not find anywhere which DAC F80 is used inside. Anybody has similar setups? How does the sound quality through digital input compare with the analogue input. How does it work as a home theatre? do appreciate your input.

Hi Joe, Welcome. The F80 is extraordinary and makes a very good job of what you feed it. The quality would beat any sound bar solution for home theatre IMHO. I use mine for DAB, CD and DVD on my 32" Phillips. I also put the said TV audio through it, analog. Once tried, you wont listen to TV speakers again without winceing at what the common man puts up with. You should get a complimentary i80 dock if you buy new now. I dont know about 96/24 optical though, others will chip in here. What colour are you considering? Cheers Chris

Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

thanks for your quick reply chris when it comes to colours, i guess nobody will argue about Rosso Corsa i suppose. Though compatibility with 24/96 is not a must, knowing its future proof surely will give me peace of mind when making a purchase. my guess is it should be 'cause F80 has the ability to play DVD and DVD's audio is capable of 24/96, but it is only my guess.

Haven't tried with the mini Toslink port, but I've played lots of 24/96 music DVDs, so my guess is it will work.

I don't believe that the F80 toslink port accepts 24/96. But 96/24 DVD-V's are supported.

Toslink does *NOT* accept 24/96. Or at least it didn't when the question was asked of Bob Stuart. Apparently the hardware is capable of it though.

I have successfully played 2-channel 24/96 material out of the Mini Toslink on a Mac Mini into the Optical Input of a G68 The G68 displayed PCM 2ch 96k as you would expect So, the Toslink connection is capable of 24/96 as it just a different implementation of SPDIF. It is however possible that Meridian's implementation in the F80 does not support 24/96. I've never tested that with the F80, so I can't say

From the various CES and CEDIA Q&A sessions: Q: Is there any chance of enabling the F80's digital input to accept 96/24?
A: We could but the playback circuits in F80 run at 48kHz, i.e. we would need to downsample. Optical links tend to be less reliable at 88/96k. Q: Is the F80 capable of outputting 96/24 (e.g. from the tuner)? If so, could this be done?
A: No. this is limited to 48k 24 bit and it is hard to justify wider bandwidth for DAB, FM or AM. Q: At CEDIA 2008, Bob stated that the F80 does not have any FIFO buffering. Not even internally off the ROM drive? Does the F80 have a PLL on its optical input? (just trying to gauge the criticality of jitter when feeding the F80 optically with other sources).
A: The F80 is not built to the same architecture as the mainstream audio components. So there is no FIFO buffering off of the CD drive, although the playback uses successive buffers. There is a PLL circuit on the TOSLink input. Changes are unlikely to happen as, I'm told, Bob moved on from the F80 project "mentally" some time ago.
