Well as the end of September is swiftly approaching I am going to need to make a decision fairly quickly.

It looks like if I go for the upgrade option I might as well upgrade the 3 DSP5000's to 24/96 at the same time - while it is still available.

Does anyone else want to add their opinions, thoughts etc :-)

Thanks again for all of your input so far :-)

If I understand...upgrade older 5ks to 24/96.

You have old tech/maybe tired components in those boxes, upgrades made sense
some years ago. I had an 18 bit pair, sold them for next to nothing, lived with 3.0 system happily (what do I know?) and then found a 5k 24/96 original (sold by Meridian Atlanta!) for new surrounds on eBay and couldn't be more pleased.

Best advice re upgrades: don't shoot behind the duck, though that's some of my history with M gear!

No need for 800s and 861s take that money and add it to said 8K fund. Roof repair? Dinning out? New auto? No no and no. Ascetic island living for you in order to continue adding to this fund.

You will never ever be sorry and you will never ever (famous last words) need to upgrade loudspeakers ie the most critical component in your hifi.

thank me now or thank me later.

I love this bit of advice, however this is never going to happen unless I win the lottery. As I am more likely to be eaten by a shark, I will never be buying 8000s. However if the lottery win were ever to arrive they would be first on my list :-)

Update the 565 now.

Sleep on the idea about updating the DSP5000. Keep your eyes open and you may find a good deal on a second hand pair/ ex demo/ B stock DSP5200 with apodizing filters.

There was a pair of (completely legit) burgundy 8ks going for around 10k a couple of months ago, so it is not necessarily a pipedream, but this kind of opportunity comes about quite rarely. I would have given them serious consideration if I'd had a place to put them (I really didn't).

Will passing the audio from the PS3 through the HD621 to the G61R allow it to play the newer DTS-HD soundtrack?

Also what exactly does the USB-in on the G61R do?

Thnaks.

Yes, PS3->HD621->G61R gets you DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD. Be sure to have the PS3 set to output LPCM on HDMI.

Allows the G6x to act as an external USB "sound card" for a PC. It's limited to 48kHz stereo.

Its development was, IMO, a complete waste of effort. Folks wanted network audio client capabilities, not to hook their G6x up to a computer in the same room...

Agreed, I was hoping for a real multichannel 8ch 24bit 96KHz soundcard but instead a 2ch 48KHz soundcard was fitted on the G68. Not my idea of a Meridian high-end USB connection.

BUT, network capabilities are what is wanted from the public. Internet radio, FLAC streaming from NAS, those kinds of things could be better used by everyone not using a SB3/audio_client today.

Controllable with a native iPod/iPhone app would be dynamite for most users.

So you plug a PC into the USB and whatever music is on the PC comes out of the G61R?

Will it take MP3's on memory sticks?

Hi again,

I have been trawling the internet over the last few days to see if I can find any reviews on the G61R - however I cannot find any at all!

Also the UK "What Hi-Fi" magazine used to list Meridian processors in their large review section that was at the back of the magazine - but since I have started looking again they seem to have no Meridian gear listed at all. I thought this was pretty weird.

Can anyone point me to a review of a G61R, or failing that even just a G61?

Because of where I live I am unable to visit a showroom to demo.

Thanks again :-)
