Sorry for the naive question - could you please explain the difference between the way that the G98DH sends DVDA as compared to the OPPO. I understand that the G98 can grab the native 96/24 off the DVDA tracks and transmit that over the proprietary MHR to the G68. Will the OPPO also send 96/24 to the G68? How about the new TrueHD and DTS MA (?) formats - will these be decoded by the OPPO or by the G68? The Oppo will decode DVDA, TruHD and DTS-MA to PCM and send that to the G68. Of those formats the G98 can only play DVDA, but can as you write use the Meridian-proprietary MHR which is said to give lower jitter than most other product combinations. But if/how much you will notice jitter we can't say. The CHT clock-upgrade is a possible way to reduce source jitter in the Oppo. The G98 will be better, but the Oppo will possibly be "Good enough" - you can't here the difference (?) Regarding the status on playing stuff from an external USB drive I neither know what Oppo has planned nor what the current FW can handle, there's too much line noise in the AVS forum. But I've read about the limitation of FAT32 disks only, no NTFS.

I'm in the process of having my Oppo BDP-83 modded by Custom HT with, amongst other things, a 4xSPDIF output. It will give me a better opportunity to compare SCAD and DVD-A to my current sources. I'd expect the Oppo to continue to be better than my 800 for DVD, equivalent for CD and inferior for DVD-A.
Agree with VK that the Oppo is best used as a digital transport.
No plans to supplant my 800, but the Oppo has already become my reference ofr DVD and Bluray.
My Kit: 861v8+ID41, 800v4, UHD722, MD600, MS600, MS200, Oppo BDP-203, Genesis 201, Genesis 350 SE, Genesis S4-8 Sub, BG 520i, VTL MB450 II, Krell Showcase 7, Genesis 928 Subs, Danley DTS10 sub, SVS Ultra 16 subs.

Simon, please do report on your comparison of the 800 vs. Oppo BDP-83 for different sources when you get the unit back from Custom HT. I was skeptical that there would be a huge difference in CD redbook vs. Apple Lossless vs. DVDA until I actually tested the three sources simultaneously with the same sountracks in different formats. I got Santana's Supernatural album in CD Redbook, converted it to Apple Lossless, compared it to the same music on DVDA. To my ears, the DVDA tracks sound fantastic with the closest resemblance to the "real" thing, followed by CD Redbook followed by Apple Lossless. The difference between DVDA and Apple Lossless was HUGE. I've actually been to an "exclusive" concert with Santana performing for 150 people in a private home -the DVDA came closest to replicating that experience. So I would be keen to hear your comments on the differences between the 800 and Oppo BDP-83 when you have time to report your findings. Many thanks!
G68J & a modified OPPO 83.
