That's one heck of deal even if they are 18bit.

Good luck.

I suspect the 5500HC is 24/96 (I think they all are but don't hold me to it)

I suspect the vertical 5500's are not despite what the seller is saying. You cannot tell by serial number that they were upgraded I don't believe.

Should have kept it quiet, now everyone knows smile

The guy is crazy selling it all together where he could easily ship smaller components.

IT sold for 2550 - for 2 5500's,a 5500hc ,a 565,a 562v2 and a velodyne hgs-15 - I would have bid more but it was about an 8 hour drive - one good thing about it is there is a local guy that has a pair of 5500's that he is thinking of selling but hes taking his time deciding (theres another pair of 5500's on the left coast open at 2K and BIN of 3k)

That is an amazing deal- several months ago the 5500HC alone would have sold for that price. The seller might have done better breaking it up.

I emailed this guy a few times. I gave him a contact at Meridian to verify what he has (since he claimed to have no clue). His response was Meridian told him that the serial numbers of 24/96 speakers began with a "2" (suspicious). He also said Meridian wanted $450usd each speaker for boxes. I was even going to send him an extra remote (since he didn't have one), to push the display button which would give the version # to verify 24/96 but he said not to bother.
He will not pay to ship. So, I called a shipping company and received a quote of $550 to transport to Florida.
Bottom Line,
I would not be shocked if this is the case of someone walking into a store, taking a few pictures of equipment, and posting for sale on eBay. As long as the guy sends you something, whatever it is, it becomes a civil case of who said what.
These "too good to be true" deals are risks!
I just hope it works out OK for whoever bought the stuff.
And I wish Meridian would be a bit more cooperative with the consumer to verify whether the serial number of a product matches up to the assumed owner, etc.

If it's too good to be true, it usually is. That said, I've contacted M in the UK a number of times, specifically Dave Hall, and he always gave me full details of previous owners, confirmation of speaker, etc within a couple of days. Now that Dave is working in R&D, not sure who would be the best contact. I think in this case, you're right and it wouldn't have made any difference - scam!!

Yeah, I was trying for someway to verify before going crazy bidding - I would insisted on Cash/pickup - I was glad when I didnt win (but theres always that little voice thats say "major score") - The guy didnt have any remotes or wires or anything with the gear - which says to me that either he didnt want to verify anything or prove it worked -

Missing remotes, and wires would signal "stolen" at best to me.

It certainly looked shady. If you look closely the 565/562 was sitting on the side of the 5500HC. And looks pretty scuffed up. I don't think it's too good to be true. And it was local pickup. So who knows it could be completely legit.
