There may be a possible reduction in the licensing costs for Blu-ray by 40%, according to the article below.

Do you suppose this may pave the way for Meridian producing Blu-ray enabled products (because of much reduced royalty payments)?

Given the price of Meridian disc spinners, I can't image the per player licensing fee has been what is holding Meridian back from introducing a Blu-ray player.

TBH - and this holds no merit other than my observations.
I fel Meridian will notrelease a bd player............... why because the bd data has been written in a way it can be recieved by the mass populous , and decoded as such - ps3 , regular onkyo stuff.
M would need a near fanatical, nay, cult following who would definitely buy the M player. Right now there is no niche market for such an object

I can buy a bd player from argos at 98 quid --- its still in argos!!
I have my ps3 for all av home theatre stuff and a sammy1500 on bedroom duty (i know these arent super mega but who has confirmed bd "philia"

The sammy runs through a denon av rec/ amp which is awesome for the bedroom!

So i feel the minor lisencing cost is irrelivent - - mean are you haggling 20 quid on your 20k m system?

I don't see why BD is any different than CD or DVD. There most certainly is a market . Question is, is it large enough? And what is BD's long term predicted future compared to past history.

No, no! The high PRICED, hi-end spinner game is over! I'm one of the forunate 50 to be taking delivery of the EAP Oppo BD-83 Bluray player later this week. It has all of the features I think I'll need, all for $500. Personally, I just can't see why I would want - or need - to fork over mulitple $ thousands for a spinner from Meridian, Krell, Theat, etc.

I certainly plan to look at the HD621 - although it would be nice to get some idea from the mothership on how/if there is an expected upgrade path to get 8 channels into my 861 - but for spinners there are much better options.

I hope you will post your experience with the Oppo BD-83 just as soon as you are permitted to.

As tedious as some of it may be check out the Oppo EAD thread over at AVS Forums. Some of these guys know what they're doing. I'm waiting for the production BD83.

Don't believe there are any restrictions on the EAP like there were for the beta users (of whom I was not one). Interestingly, the BD-83 will determine, for me, whether the impending Meridian HD621 is workable. I currently use the second 3xSPDIF MCH input on my 861 for a modified SACD player. If SACD over the BD-83 HDMI output is the sonic equal of my current modded SACD player, then the HD621 is a go. If the BD-83 is inferior with SACD, then I shall live with analog audio for Bluray.

I believe that the fine folk at Arcam have announced a Bluray player.

So from what I gather in this thread is that with what the cost would be for an upgrade to the 800 and the video could not be that much better than lower priced units we can see that the end has come for the 800? Because yes there are great spinners out there and what can the 800 offer better? I own a 800 and I guess I must face the reality that it has met it's time. With the 808i.2 for CD and cheap great DVD players for DVD what does the 800 has to offer? Unless M can do an upgrade for very low cost the 800 seems now to be on the side lines,
possible for good. I really truly hope not.
