Mr561, I can only speak for myself. I am not rich at all. I guess Meridian attracts a number of customers. One side the rich who want the best and don't care about the money. The other side are people who save up for a long time to buy equipment. Isn't there a macdonalds factor (cost of a big mac) We could make a 861 factor. I earn before taxes 4 861's a year. That is about 2,5 861's after taxes. (numbers of a basic 861 taken - without extra cards)
But it helps to look around for some good deals. You might be suprised what kind of nice deals you can find when you are patient.
I agree with Jaco. I am also most definitely not rich. It is a big financial committment for me and it takes a LONG time saving to acquire these pieces. Reproducing music in the most faithful way I can is my one significant vice in life. I prioritize my options around it similar to some people who want expensive automobiles. My auto is thirteen years old and I hope it lasts for another ten!
I also think Jaco gives good advice on wise purchasing. Where there is a will there is a way and for those who look hard enough and are patient, good values can be had.

I concur with mwiebelhaus. It's about priorities. My car is a 1991 with 140k miles on it. Given a choice between upgrading my car and upgrading my stereo, it's a no brainer. Where do you derive the most pleasure - driving to work or listening to music? I'm certainly not hanging out over at the new car forums! To each his own.
I have a company car and indeed like Frank and Mwiebelhaus write, Home cinema is the only hobby i have besides playing indoor football (soccer), but that does not cost much. Working overtime also does help. I can work a lot as i am working in IT bussiness. Every extra hour brings me closer to something new.
Hi fidelity is my #1 hobby as well, and I earn 70k per year plus a bonus. Still, all that money for a DVD player just seems like an unwise investment, even if it is Meridian.
My player is set up as a transport to the 861. As such, it has the minimum number of cards. One card is the video output card (included in the base price of all 800's) which has one composite, s-video and component output each. The other card that is not included in the base price is the OE22 digital output card. This card has three multichannel digital outputs and an extra secondary output.
As far as cables included, there is a power cord and a serial computer cable for connecting your computer to the 861 for downloads. Last but not least is the famous blue digital coax cable Meridian has been including for as long as I have been a customer of theirs!
If they want you to hook up the 800v3 to the 861v3 with 3 leads it would make sense they supply you with 3 of them.. They do not seem to cost very much, and with the price of the units in mind it should be possible
