My understanding is that Cliff is right. You can control a Receiver through SqueezeCenter but you need the handset to initially set it up. I'm not sure that the Receiver works with SlimServer.

Thanks. That's averted a costly mistake. I know its early days, but does anyone know if its just the wlan that needs configuring this way - would a wired lan be any different as this could be configured under DHCP.

The Duet manual says that in wired networks you can set up the Controller using the Receiver as a bridge. This implies that the Receiver can connect to a wired network without intervention from the Controller. That being the case you should be in business without the Controller. It may be wise to post the question on the Slim forum to be sure.

No, I don't think so. The first generation Controller doesn't have an IR capability and works solely via wlan. A programmable IR capability is additional feature I'd really like.

A controller would be nice, though I like the web interface on a laptop, but the reciever without the display isn't appealing. SB3 + controller, it would be!

Hold the senior moment thought. The wheel does rotate -- can't explain how I missed this on first grab!

EDIT:

-- I see now why I thought the wheel didn't rotate. It is smooth plastic like the rest of the remote, affording your thumb little traction. A dry finger slides over it. It should be textured or rubberized.

Anybody got theirs yet? Still waiting for mine to ship...

I received mine on Thursday and hooked everything up over the weekend. This was my first venture into music streaming/music server and I must admit that I am very pleased. I had not had an ultra high-end spinner in the system for quite a while, so I can't comment on the improved sound of the system, but I love the convenience of sitting down to listen to music and being able to jump from song to song, artist to artist without having to get up, find the CD, load, ect. It always seems that when I sit down and start listening to one artist, I am reminded of other songs by other artists that I haven't heard in a while and this frees up the ability to jump around. To my fifty year old ears, I think it sounds awesome!

One operational quirk or possible bug I've found:

on an SB, I'll scroll through my playlists, select one, then select a song in it to play. After that will come the next song in the playlist and so forth like you'd expect. I've got it set to album repeat, so the playlist becomes circular.

With the Duet remote, I can highlight a playlist, hit play, and it will perform as above. But if I go past the playlist and select a song, the song repeats despite my setting of album repeat.

A little annoying that the SB and Duet operate differently; more to think about, and thinking gives me a headache.

Haven't had too much time to play yet, so not much else to report. Do notice that reponsiveness correlates to signal strength, not surprisingly.
