While my daughter was watching a movie, about 2/3rd's of the way through the movie a constand loud buzz/beeping tone was emitted from the speakers. It scared the hell out of everyone.

At the time I was in bed asleep sick with a stomach virus when this sound started and got me out of my beauty sleep, what a rude awakening. I thought holy crap, what the hell was that. I didn't know what it was. I thought it was my alarm clock or my mobile, a sound you don't normally hear every day.

My wife walked in and said the sound came from the speakers. I thought.....[censored].....I've blown my speakers AGAIN. I posted a thread a little while ago on here about how my tweeters were cooked on my JBL XPL-200 speakers. The culprit being my Lavry DA10 and a misconfigured 568.2mm.

Unfortunately for me, some damage has occured on all my drivers. All DCR values on all the drivers have dropped slightly since last testing them when I slotted in the replacement tweeters.

Instead of white noise, I got this noise out of stargate, like when they open the doors to their underground facility but with a constant beep tone added in. I checked the 568 and noticed it had lost audio sync with the DVD player. Using the remote or the buttons on the 568 did not work so I had to do a hard reset in order for it to work again and pick up the sound from my DVD player.

I've never had this buzzin/beeping sound before but I've had occasions where the 568 has lost audio sync with the DVD player when changing discs and sometime the 568 would lock up completely and have had to turn it off to get it going again.

I have the DVD player connected to the 568 using Meridian's blue digital cable. The DVD player is a cheapie $50 MTV DVD player and I'm wondering if this is the culprit in this case.

What would cause the Meridian to emit such a beep/buzz sound? Is there a preference as to whether it is better to use coax digital over optical? I've always thought coax digital was a sweeter warmer sound as opposed to the more clinical/harsher sound of optical? Is this problem that I'm having only inherit to using digital? Would I have had the same problem if I used RCA?

Has anyone had any experience with a buzz/beep sound coming from their Meridian processors in the middle of listening to music or movies? I don't know whether or not this is specific to the 568's or if this hapens to processors across the Meridian board.

I'm starting to loose faith with my 568.2mm and ever since I've had it in the system, I've had these hiccups on the way. The first one was my fault but this buzz tome is presume is 568's own doing. I want to love the 568.2mm but it's doing a damn good job of trying to rid itself from my system.

Is it common for processors to lockup occasionally or lose audio sync with devices? I'm wondering if this was a problem that already existed by the previous owner and is why they got rid of it? Mine was from a deceased estate sale so I would think not.

Cheers
Pasadena

Hi, Is it a Mains Hum?

Perhaps you have a dry solder joint or the like.
This happened to my 541, just as I sold it.
Meridian sorted it easily.

Have you the latest Firmware loaded?

Just random thoughts to get you back to the top of the list.

Cheers, Chris smile

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the tips.

The constant buzz/beep tone is entriely different to mains hum, this is something I've never heard before.

I had an electrician install 3 dedicated circuits for my setup, 2 x 20amp and 1 x 10amp. The 568.2mm is on its own circuit so I can't see it being a problem. I've never had any hum from mains before so I can't think what might have happened, especially being one off.

I have the latest firmware loaded - 2.5b9 and the only change that I have made in the past few weeks is setting the precision bit from 24 to 16 on my CD, DVD and Game sources. I have now changed these back to 24-bit.

I'll have to at some stage open up the 568 to check for dry solder joints, which I didn't find when I first received it. I always open items, unless it is brand new to check the interior and take some photos for reference.

I have a spike protection circuit installed at the mains board but do not have any conditioners installed for any of my equipment. I have been pondering purchasing a PS Audio power plant, which some of you swear by but something further down the track to look at.

In saying that, I have had problems with the electrical spikes from the road in the past but that was all before I had the house re-wired and the mains board completely replaced and had protection devices installed. Haven't had problems since. It could be that dirty power may have come through and affected the 568. Who knows.

I think a good place to start off with would be to replace my cheapie DVD player. I am waiting for the new Oppo DVD player to be released and I am also looking at maybe purchasing a PS3.

Cheers
Pasadena.

For the record it's called a "Cold" solder joint" not "Dry" :-) at least in the US any way.

Hello,
I think i can help. My 568.2 suffered the same thing.Locking up,crazy noises, etc. My noises only occured while watching DTS sources.Horrible pops, clicks, wierdo stuff had made me check all my tweeters for damage.
My fix. A 50.00 APC ups battery back up from office depot.Never had a problem again. I have owned both the 568.1 and a 861.Neither needed this or behaved this way.My opinion is that the 568.2 is more picky about its power from the outlet. Here in Florida lightning capital of the world we tend to have dips and all out power outs some that only last a second or two.The 568.2 hated those it would always lock up and i would have to reset.I have had the ups in place for about 3-4 months now with no issues what so ever.Even while watching DTS. Hope this helps you to, Ron
