While perusing through some threads regarding 3x SP-DIF output and audio decoding from HDMI and mods to Oppo DVD players by Shawn Fogg, prompted me to post a thread about Oppo's up and coming release.

I'm not sure if people are aware but Oppo Digital is about to release their final killer version of their SD player before heading into the domain of high definition.

Among some interesting points is that it uses an ABT 102 deinterlacing chip and ABT 1010 scaling engine. Expected to sell for around $300-$349.

Here is the link to a thread on AVsforum.

The intended release date for this player is Late February/March.

I thought this was worth bringing up to members here who are thinking about purchasing a SD player or those that are thinking about purchasing one of Oppo's existing DVD players to have Shawn Fogg mod.

Here's a link to Ric Schultz' website. He has info on modding Oppo and other players plus many products on offer that may be an interesting read.

as usual ill be accused of being a fanboy, but this player will be VERY VERY VERY VERY GOOD for dvds and lossless audio formats (less so for cds, but you cant have everything)

whats good is that it goes with a full ABT solution, unlike most that rely on the chepaer and absolutely horrendous NEC deinterlacer... In regards to DVD upsampling, this should pretty much be as near as possible to combining a good DVD player (e.g. 596) with a DVD0 Scaler...

Even Anchor bay said that the 983 campares favourably to an SDI modded DVD + theh DVD0... that is no small feat

Looks great. The 983 is a serious option for an upscaling universal player, and the 980 if you have an external video processor; both in conjunction with a Meridian processor, of course.

Oft forgotten, one priceless "feature" of the Oppo players is that their DVD layer-change is so quick it is rarely noticeable (much much better than Meridian players in spite of what Meridian says); and Oppo players are "Meridian-compatible" when it comes to maintaining the bitstream at layer-change (no muting and relay-clicking in Meridian processors).

The DV-983H sounds like it has an excellent array of features and I'm looking forward to its impedning release, hopefully much sooner than later.

My old pioneer DV-525 player crapped itself and I sold off my Denon DVD-S10 to search for a more techology updated CD/DVD solution. I've been without a CD/DVD player for the past 6 months and only recently borrowed my father in-laws mtv DVD player, which does the job, for now.

I have a Sony 86CM CRT and not planning to upgrade to any flat panel display until at least the end of the year until the format wars have sided. I could be waiting a long time.

I'm more interested in audio than video at the moment but right now I'm looking for a DVD player to compliment my 600+ SD DVD collection and the Oppo DV-983H seems like the perfect match for my needs.

I'm thrilled with my recent puchase of the 568.2mm and will be following closely the audio decoding soltions offered by switchbox and gefen and maybe Meridian by the end of the year. From the mods that are currently made available to exisiting Oppo DVD players, a souped up DV-983H sounds extremely tantilising.

Though, I have to say that the format wars for high definition are really giving me a headache so I'm happy to sit on the fence and rediscover my DVD collection.

Oh what fun......! smile
