I recently modded my player with SPDIF board from Audiopraise so that I can enjoy high resolution PCM output for my SACD / DVD-A Collections.
However I have to limit the output to 96kHz otherwise the DSP-8ks cannot lock the signal via SPDIF.
I found DSP-8ks spec said:
Inputs: Two digital inputs to SPDIF standard; 32kHz-96kHz sampling rates at up to 24 bit; MHR support. (A future software update will enable support for 192kHz.)
So I did call Meridian UK around early Jan 2008 enquirer about the hi-res PCM input. The tech guy said in confident that the 8ks can accept 192kHz PCM via coaxial SPDIF.
I forgot to ask about the 172kHz, but if 192kHz is supported, so should 172kHz?
My 8ks was delivered about late Oct 2007 and I haven't bought a com cable to check it's firmware version.
Anyone here has successfully feeding 172/192kHz PCM (Not MHR) to the 8ks?
Thanks,

The tech guy said in confident that the 8ks can accept 192kHz PCM via coaxial SPDIF. I didn't think this was physically possible with SPDIF from a bandwidth perspective.

I think SPDIF can physically transport 2ch@192/24.

Almost all the DSP speakers have had this note on them since 24/96 existed. Including the DSP8000's.
Inputs: Two digital inputs to SPDIF standard; 32kHz-96kHz sampling rates at up to 24 bit; MHR support. (A future software update will enable support for 192kHz.)

Interesting enough DSP8000, 7000, 6000, 5500, 5000 states about future support of 192kHz. Only DSP5200, 3100 were left out. Makes me wonder if they are "hardware" inferior to other siblings.. This is a bit out of topic. 172/192kHz over SPDIF is not official standard, but SPDIF COAXIAL DO support this. TacT's processor can do 192kHz over coaxial (but not optical SPDIF, optical is limited to 96kHz) My 5200 does not accept 172kHz signal as well. The screen will just keep on flashing. Since 8000 states it will support 192kHz in future software, though the web page haven't been updated for a long time, just wonder if anyone have successful experience with 192kHz signal. It might be the speaker can support 192kHz, but not 172kHz ? Unfortunately I don't have 192kHz DVD-A... I believe there are quite a few users on this forum also have modded player from DVDUpgrades This board also output SACD at 88/172kHz. Hearing SACD though 88kHz is already a wonderful experience and I just cannot imaging when it's working at 172kHz...

I recently (just before Xmas) had my 8000s back at the factory for conversion and upgrades, and asked the same question to the service department, wishing to make the necessary changes if they were available. I cannot remember the exact answer, but it was something along the lines that they had no information about this and to the best of their knowledge no special cabling was available from M.

So have you tried feeding the 8ks with hi-res PCM ? I doubt there can be any special cabling.. The Master speaker have only 1 SPDIF out to slave speaker.. Nothing can be changed here.

I think S/PDIF can physically transport 2ch@192/24. yes but technically it is not desirable -----Original Message----- From: ************* Sent: 31 January 2008 05:30 To: Martin Reynolds Subject: some help
i hope you could help me with this matter.
I am planning on doing a nice little combo consisting of a
Meridan 596 > RCA Digital output > DCS Purcell (just about to purchase second hand, pre firewire version) >RCA Digital output > Meridian 568 > 2x XLR balanced audio to a primare A30.2 amp.
I know that the 568 can only accept 96khz/24 bit, but i was wondering since the DCS supports 192khz/24bit, is there anyway to output it over RCA (for a future receiver)... or can it only be output over IEEE in the newer version upsamplers only to a compatibale DAC (such as the DCS elgar?)
tnx Dear Mr ********,
All Purcells will output 24/96 on single wire PCM interfaces (AES, RCA, BNC) as well as Dual AES (AES1 + AES2). All Purcells will output 24/176.4 or 24/192 on the Dual AES interface ONLY. We do not support 24/176.4 or 24/192 over single wire PCM interfaces due to signal degradation. These interfaces were originally specified for use at up to 24/48 and do not give adequate performance at 24/192. Although some manufacturers are doing this, single wire PCM at 192kS/s is not recognised in the industry as a standard format.
I hope this helps.

Truth is, no I have not tried to feed the 8000s with a 24/192 signal. In fact, I am not aware of any records with such signals, and even if I did find any I am not sure whether the equipment I have will provide such a signal. Perhaps I was totally mistaken, but I thought that the special cabling required was internal to the 8000s and not external - hence the request to Meridian to carry out the upgrade if available.

It's clear that 176/192 over single wire is not a standard. But Meridian only have 1 SPDIF input and their spec saying future support (of 192kHz) is available. Which means they are going the non-standard way. I'm just here to ask if anyone knows this feature is "enabled" or still in future roadmap?
