Whilst a little frustrated that the Meridian Dock seems no nearer, I have read that the Krell and Wadia docks take their outputs from the iPod digitally, rather than from the analogue line-out.
Anyone know if this is true?

No ipods do not have a digital output, well not on any of the ones I have right up to the video iPod I have asked this question from apple and they say it has no digital output. this website gives a full pinout of the iPod http://pinouts.ru/Devices/ipod_pinout.shtml also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dock_Connector hope that helps. I gather the f80 dock is out very shortly or that is what I was told the other day when I phoned. Michael

There are several car audio products that support USB connection to the iPod for playback.

At CES, Wadia released their new i-Transport Dock, which bypasses the internal D/A and Output stage of the iPod.
The output from the Dock is Digital and the implication is that no D/A is taking place.
The ABSOLUTE correctness of this and how much of an improvement it will be in reality remains to be seen

I think some docks read the data directly and decode it through the data port.

The ABSOLUTE correctness of this and how much of an improvement it will be in reality remains to be seen however the iPod can only output analogue it has no SPDIF output so either it uses the USB/Firewire connection and has some clever electronics to control and stream a firewire signal and turn that into SPDIF I don't know. But the basics are the iPod has neve had a SPDIF/pcm output on the connector. Michael.
